We have to do ours through our venue, but I was all about this as an option before we chose our place.
My sister got hers from Costco- $250 to feed 175 people and it was very good. THe fondant work was ehhhh, but if you have a simple design I would do it!
Do you have Safeway by you? They still make everything in store from scratch like a true bakery.
I had Publix cake at my shower and it was delicious. As long as you are ok with buttercream and a simpler design I think its a good option.
Publix has the BEST tasting cake - we would've gone with them if we hadn't had a family friend make our cake for us :)
The Sobey's (Canadian grocery store) by my house makes THE BEST banana chocolate cake and would LOVE to have that @ a wedding! As long as you test the cake beforehand, I'd say, go for it!
(ps - the high priced bakeries are putting the exact same ingrediants in your cake as the grocery store will)

This is the cake I chose from Hy-Vee for our wedding. for 100 people, this is running me right at about 300.00. We just went with chocolate/vanilla marble . Those are gumpaste flowers. They told me I could go with real flowers instead and that would knock about $40 off the price.
My cousin had a grocery store cake at his wedding. I believe it was from Wegmans and was less than $200... It wasn't anything spectacular, but it tasted good (honestly, it was fresher and more moist than many bakery wedding cakes I've had) and it was decorated nicely with buttercream roses.
The only sort of crappy thing was that it was either dropped off by a delivery person, or someone went to pick it up from the store, and it came with each tier in a separate box. At any rate, no one from the store was there to set it up at the reception, so it did end up looking a little wonky because it wasn't put together quite right.
Costco has delicious cakes. That's where we usually go for birthday cake or other events. Only problem is that the sheet cakes are Big so you need alot of people!
We plan to have safeway sheet cake. Its delish! and way cheaper and at the end of the day i could care less about my wedding cake. does that sound bad? I would rather invite more people than have a beautiful $800 cake ( we have 226 guestlist)
I'm not into the Safeway cakes as much as some others. We have Winco and that is the best for grocery store cakes. Costco is good, if I chose sheet cakes I would have a small cake made for cutting. Just my opinion.
I think that is a great cost cutting option. I would if I could but they don't make vegan cakes from my knowledge.
I didn't know Costco makes wedding cakes? Isn't one big square cake? I'm not too familiar with them but I would love to see the outcome of one, design wise.
THANLS EVERYONE FOR YOUR INPUT, I'LL DEFINITELY BE GETTING PRICES FROM A GROCER NOW :)
@Hollymarieee: I thought getting a grocery store cake would be cheaper. For me, it wasn't. I got a much better tasting cake from a baker. I based my comparison on the sizes of the tiers (not the number of servings). The grocery store was theoreitcally cheaper per serving, but the baker had servings that were 2-3 times as big as the grocery store. In other words, a tier the grocery store said served x but the baker said served half as many people. Since the price was based per serving, the overall price was cheaper going with the baker. Plus, the baker had 1/3 as thick of a layer of icing the grocery store did and the cake tasted much better.
I'm getting mine from a grocery store called Ukrops. The only thing is their wedding cakes taste different from their usual cakes because the wedding cake is normally made a bit heavier than a regular cake so expect a cake that's a something like pound cake texture
We are getting our cake from Walmart and they actually make beautiful cakes.
We are getting one that feeds 125 ppl for $125!
I don't want fondont and we have a very simple design we wanted and they can do it all.
I had no desire to pay $300 plus on a cake when I didn't have to.
We are doing this with purple ribbon and no bows
I did a publix cake for our wedding and they did a terrible job on it. Couldve just been that one publix, but if I could do it again I wouldve spent the extra money and gone with the real bakery!
I'm getting a sheet cake from a local bakery, along with a small cake for cutting (thinking birthday cake sized). The sheet cakes at Costco are definately cheaper - it just depends on what it is that you want! The local bakery had the flavour we wanted, but we would have done Costco otherwise.
We are going to have a very small cake from wal-mart, I haven't actually priced it yet. I'm planning on getting it without any design and then putting ribbon and pearls around the bottom so i don't have to worry about them not doing well with the design (just in case, I'm kind of a control freak). I will be making 4 flavors of cupcakes for the guests which should end up being very inexpensive!
I went to a wedding that served cupcakes from Stater Bros. They were good and had chocolate shavings on top, so they looked pretty. But it depends on what you're looking for. Grocery stores don't have the biggest selection of flavors and can't go very intricate with the designs but they are usually cheaper and do taste good.
I am getting a grocery store cake. We are getting it from Dierbergs (a local chain in St. Louis). One of their stores has a European bakery, so they actually have a cake designer that specializes in this kind of stuff. For $250 we are getting a 3 teired cake with a sheet cake in the back with the decorations we want, and she is actually delivering it and finishing the final touches when she gets to our location. I am pretty excited with the price!
I did the above for a friend's wedding in Lake Tahoe. We bought plain cakes at Sam's Club in Reno and decorated them with silk flowers and sugar glitter. Tis was in '07 before they started decorating them so pretty as they do now. I would definately go for it as an option for a simple design. However, we did my daughter's cake from a local baker (Rosmoor Pasteries) and it was $4 a slice and the delivered it and set it up. To me, if it's that close in price (someone said $3 a slice) I would go with the bakery. But I think Sam's is cheaper than that. Best wishes on your wedding!
I'm having my venue do our cake, but I had to tell them that I did not want fondant AT ALL! Hate the stuff. And I know that all of my family will try to eat it and complain. Lol. But I would have gone the grocery store route if my venue didn't do ours for cheap and have a really cute little option of a small lemon cake, with big sheet cakes of tiramisu for the guests =]
I think that it would work great if you go to a grocery store that has GOOD examples of their work. I say this because I used to work in a supermarket bakery that had a high turnover rate, which resulted in no one being very good at anything, particularly cake decorating. Someone once ordered a cake for their wedding from us, and we were in disbelief - we did not do a good job with cakes (I was a seasonal employee, and therefore they wouldn't take the time to teach me cake decorating)
However, I am sure it can be done . The bakery I worked at may have sucked, but another grocery stores 10 minutes away has some beautiful cakes on display!
I think Safeway, and Raleys are good bets for wedding cake. When I worked at a grocery store the cake decorators were really good and many had had that same job for YEARS, some work certain schedules - and likely the one who has been arround the longest wont be working on Saturday or Sunday to make your cake if your doing your wedding on those days so make sure to ask.
As a hobby baker, I have to say nope! The stores around here put wayyyy too much of that nasty pastey buttercream on the cakes and the sponge is so dense, blech! Nope, I'm making my own. Glad to hear that not ALL grocery stores have crappy cakes like we have here!
I have had a couple of friends use Wal-Mart for their cakes. They were good. They had different style cakes and accented them with fresh flowers. As a guest you couldn't event tell it was from Wally World!
As a cake decorator, I would have to say absolutely not to a grocery store cake. They are mass produced and have a ton of artificial ingredients. I think cake is one of those "you get what you pay for" items. You pay more at bakeries, but, in most cases, you get a better product. One of the options I offer is a smaller tiered cake and sheet cakes. I charge less per serving for the sheet cakes because I don't spend nearly as much time decorating. And your guests won't know the difference once it's on their plate.
As a guest, the best wedding cake I have ever eaten came from a small independent grocery store. It tasted even better than anything from Safeway, etc and even local bakeries. I heard a few months later that folks were still praising the couple for the cake which was amazingly good.
I wouldn't have any issues with a grocery store cake. However most of them are very limited in flavor selection and design. Plus, you have to pick them up and assemble them yourself. If neither of those are concerns, then go for it. You'll be saving a ton of money too. From a guest's perspective, no one cares where it came from (nor will anyone tell them) or what it looks like, but they definitely care how it tastes.
ok i have a question! for the girls that got the tiered ones---how did you transport since grocery store = no delivery?!?!?
I have tried red velvet cake at more places than you can imagine. I've tried fancy red velvet from Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bakery. I've tried red velvet at Oprah's favorite place for it, Doughboys in LA. I've tried in the form of cupcakes, cakepops, by the slice, etc. Whenever I saw it on a menu, I ordered it.
And the BEST red velvet cake still remains the one for $15 from Ralphs. It is hands down the best one. I plan to have it at my wedding. :)
The other flavors at Ralphs are delicious too. You can get like 6 different cakes and set them up nice and pretty on a table and it'll cost you less than $100.
We're using Publix. They will delivery it to our venue too! Woot Woot! It's approx $300 for 150 people.
I'm so glad to hear some great reviews on WalMart cakes, since we are using them, too! Actually, our cake is very similar to the design of SandyThePoet. For $150, we couldn't go wrong.
@DawnaN: I used to be a hobby baker. (not making my cake so I don't stress). When I was, I needed to get a new car, so I purposly purchased one that had a box shape, so I could transport cakes. It's a Scion XB. So, for transporting, any station wagon/SUV will work. Please no sedans or trucks - you seriosly need the flat space. WM will be boxing our whole cake, and it is stacked.

Hi Bees!
So I;m currently on a mission to get a great price for my wedding cake.
Someone mentioned to try our local grocery stores (Albertsons, Ralphs, Costco, Sams club, etc...)
Have any of you got your wedding cake from a super market? PRICE? how did it taste?
Thank you :)
