Oh, yes it is cheaper to buy. We looked every where, none of the tux rental places had a matte finish, they were all shiny (silver) vests. We finally found it at a store in the mall and the vest, pants and skinny tie were less than $140. We still have to purchase the white button up shirt.

We’re doing the same thing, and the boys are able to rent a la carte from my bridal salon. They carry tuxes from Jim’s, so you might want to do a search for locations that carry them in your area. They have the Savoy, which you can get with pleated or flat front pants (extra $5) and a fullback vest (unlike many rental places):

We’re getting a similar set in a darker grey, and it looks great.

You can definitely rent suit pieces from a tux shop, but this is pretty much exactly what our groomsmen wore, and it was significantly cheaper to buy than rent. Their entire ensemble – dress pants, matching vest, same white designer dress shirt, and tie – cost around $80 total. I didn’t care about the shoes, just told them nice black dress shoes and they followed through. The tux shops we looked at wanted a minimum of $150 per suit rental, and didn’t carry any of the colors or styles we wanted.

Buying outright meant no worrying about getting the right size from a shop, getting the exact colors and style we wanted, and no dealing with picking up/returning/late fees. Buying the suits was no fuss and incredibly cost effective. I even noticed that two of the groomsmen have already worn their groomsman suit to other weddings and formal affairs. Even more bang for their buck. Love it.

@madteaparty:  The guys bought each piece as separates on sale.
