@MrsNerdy: I'm doing one. My FI is a huge poker player so I'm having a poker table made out of the grooms cake with chips and everything. Something like this!

Im definitely doing a grooms cake! We're having an unusal cake setup. We're doing a main cake - 3 tiers - but probably a little smaller than typical wedding cakes, and then we're having 12-13 additional cakes - all different styles - all on a main cake table. So it will be this amazing display of a bunch of different cakes. Anyways, I'm planning to create a grooms cake that includes lots of different things that are important to him and us. Kind of like a funky collage on a cake. Im so excited about it!
I had planned on it but my FI isn't a huge fan of cake so we are doing groom's cookies to be served at the rehearsal dinner. :P
@RhubarbPie: that sounds really cool! your guests will have tons of choices!! Make sure to post pictures after your wedding!
@Snow2bunny: that will be really cute. Does he know about it, or is it a surprise?
Ours was a super nerdy Dungeons & Dragons cake!

It was a huge hit.
Yes we are. FH knows he will have a cake but doesn't know what it will look like. He's from Texas and likes the Spurs, so I plan to have the baker make a cake in the shape of texas and put the Spurs team logo on it. Hope he likes it :)
I'm making one for our RD as a surprise... giving it a first try next weekend, I think.
My fiance is getting a subway map cake. He is obsessed with the NYC subway maps. We have like five or six up in our apartment.
I'm getting one that looks like this! Let's hope the Pats win next Sunday and it will make it even better :)

I am making our grooms cake. I have some experience in cakes, and can pull off a 10 or 12 inch round chocolate to go with the brides cake, which is vanilla and raspberry pretty quickly. The topper/theme is the lighthouse we were engaged at. Here's a pic of the lighthouse - it should be fairly easy to replicate in rice krispy treats and fondant, and I'll put it ontop of a buttercream cake.
My FI found a picture of a krispy Kreme wedding cake that he keeps teasing me about ordering.
So I'm thinking of surprising him with a krispy kreme grooms cake.

or I may go with the superhero cake. It's a toss up.

Were doing wedding pie instead of grooms cake. It gives people more choices and is his absolute favourite dessert.
My Fiance is a big gamer to, I'm not sure what we are doing yet as far as cakes. If you can't decide between zelda and mario, you should do a nintendo themed cake. Check this one out.

I did a sushi cake. It's actually one of the biggest trends that's coming back now. I'm a wedding planner in Connecticut, and out fo 28 weddings this year I only have 3 that aren't having a grooms cake.

I'm getting a Mario grooms cake http://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-photos/i/green-orange-pink-red-white-yellow-modern-style-grooms-cakes-square-black-blue-brown/i/4bc23a4674ab0e79-cfc08bfb8485f32b/f28ec054d2fbbf1b?tags=square&page=7&cat=cakes&type=search
if you google super mario wedding cakes and look at the images, there are hundreds!!!
We are having a University of Texas themed cake since thats where we met. We originally thought we were going to do the tower, but so many people do that. We are either going to these

(probably just one and flat maybe?)
or the shape of texas with the school seal and longhorns on it!
The grooms cake is just so much fun so I think if you had budget you should definitely do it!
DH had a Minecraft Creeper grooms cake, you can see it behind our main cake.

We are having one... just for fun! My FI is really into Dr. Who and we had thought about having a Tardis cake. We might scale it down to something like the second pic though since we will be making it and I'll have enough to do right before my wedding and don't really want to worry about making a very complicated cake!

is groom cake really a southern tradition? I live in NW and have not been to a wedding with groom's cake yet. Just curious if it's very popular now.
maybe I will surprise him with a cake that day :)
I'm a doing a Groom's cake, I was thinking about making some kind of sign to put with it, but I'm not sure what it should say.
@MrsNerdy: Love Zelda! You could do a Triforce lol
My FI loves cranes, excavators etc...we are trying to do a crane for his cake. He's actually welding an 8 ft tower crane to lift/hold the "real" wedding cake, should be interesting...he's making it mechanical so it can lift and rotate 360 degrees. I love that he is so into participating. People will think it's weird but I couldn't care less!

I realize grooms cakes are more of a Southern tradition, but is anybody else doing one? We've discussed doing a mario themed one (FI is a gamer and I love Mario also, one year we went as Mario and Peach for halloween so its kinda our thing) but FI seemed to really want a Zelda cake, but we agreed not enough people would get it. Now i'm thinking of surprising him with either a Zelda cake, or a 3 tiered cake with a tier of Mario, Zelda, annnnd something else but I dont know what yet.
Anybody else doing a fun grooms cake?
