I haven't seen a groom surprised by a groom's cake (I don't think many people in New England, where I'm from, do groom's cakes), but I think it's a good idea to talk to your DJ for suggestions! Check with the coordinator at your venue and with your caterer as well - they would probably have experience with that sort of thing.
Can you do it at the rehearsal dinner?
Are you going to bring attention to the fact that it is his birthday at your wedding? I feel like he may not want that, but if you gave him a cake at the rehearsal which would be the day after his b-day and all his fam/close friends would be there as well, it would be really nice.
I'm seriously thinking about doing a groomscake too. But was told he didn't want one. But I'm not listening. Anyhoo, if I do it, it will be at rehearsal dinner.
I'm doing a grooms cake and I'm hoping that we can keep it in the kitchen area of our venue until the cake-cutting. I'm thinking that after we cut the cake, I can be all, "Oh hey, I have a surprise for you!!" And he'll be all, "LOLWUT?!?" And maybe one of my bridesmaids or someone can grab the cake and bring it out and he'll think, "OMG Best Wife EVAR." At least, that's my initial plan.... :)
Of course it's okay to NOT have one! You can do whatever you want!!
We're doing a grooms cake! FI loves fishing so here's what we're doing:

Artsprout.love - I did want to do it at the wedding because it's his 30th, not just a random number, and wanted to celebrate it. I suppose I could do it at the rehearsal, I need to find out when that's going to be. I just thought it would be great to do something at the reception with ALL of our family and friends there, almost like throwing him a big surprise party, too.
I still have time to figure it out, but I thought, all the weddingbee posters have great ideas, why not throw it out there! He has no idea about this, I already know what I want to get (the BMW logo). I thought I could incorporate it into some kind of "kissing game" that the DJ does, but now I'm not sure what the heck to do.
We did! Husband is an Ohio State Grad, so I surprised him with a FUNFETTI (yum) cake of their stadium-the Horseshoe

Ours was hidden, so when we walked in I presented it to him in front of everyone. His friends and he thought I was the best wife EVERRR
Was it right when they introduced you, and it was just there? or you brought it out?
He is planning his own groom's cake. He can pick whatever he wants (probably the Memphis Grizzlies) and I can have the planning for "the cake" all to myself....sly huh?
they had it on a table already, covered with a tablecloth for the unveiling. They offered to have it in back and carry it out at the right time but I decided against it. It was just easier and faster the way we did it
I have a friend who surprised her new husband with a Redskins grooms cake - the DJ started playing the Redskins fight song, and the cake was wheeled out for him to cut. He loved it.
haha no, I wish!...a friend of a friend did though, thank you! Im not nearly that talented =o) I tried a smooth buttercream cake once..it looked like a 4 year old did it! Im gonna try my hand in fondant, think it might be easier to work with.
just wanted to come back and thank everyone for their feedback on this subject...I decided I'm going to do the surprise at our rehearsal dinner, but I'm still going to mention something at the wedding in a speech :)
THANKS!
I am from the South, I mean the way down South. And my caterer told me that Groomsmens Cakes are a "southern thing", so they may be why a lot of you are on the fence about having one. Personally, I think anyone can have a groomsmen cake whereever you are from, north, east, south, west. lol! No big deal. I do think groomsmens cakes are a good idea. It made my FI feel better because it is a replica of his truck, and it made him feel like it wasn't so "girly". I definately think you should suprise him with this, he would love it!
haha We're from new england but we're doing a grooms cake anyway. FI really wanted buffalo wings for his wedding dinner, but he'll end up wearing orange the rest of the night (not good when hes wearing a white tie!) so we're compromising & having a grooms cake in the shape of a buffalo wing, or a plate of wings (not decided yet).
What do you think will look better - single wing or a plate of wings with blue cheese & the works?

So..it's my FH's birthday 2 days before our wedding. Since he "kind of" gets shafted out of a birthday bash, I'm going to get him a groom's cake and I want to surprise him somehow. I'm thinking about talking to the DJ about what he thinks we can do to get him on the dance floor and then bring the cake out, or something to do with the best man.
How have you seen grooms surprised with a cake? or what are you doing? I need some good ideas!!
