I have had a very hard time deciding what to get my fiance for a wedding present. He is an engineer and pretty into techy things. I know he would love something like an iPhone, but I can't imagine he would still have that in 30 years, or even 3? I thought about a dress watch, but I recently got him an automatic everyday watch, so it sort of seems like reusing the idea. He is wearing his grandfathers cufflinks, so that pretty much covers the jewelry thing. I thought about tickets to an event, but I think he would prefer something long lasting that he can hold onto.
So after lots of searching and brainstorming, I think I would like to get him a travel journal to record our trips together. I think it is something we can always keep and look back on, and start on our honeymoon together. I found one at Cranes, but its only $46, which seems a little on the low side. I might try to find a nice blank journal and specify that's what its for.
I can come up with a nice analogy about how getting married is the beginning of a journey together, and how we will always have each other to experience things with.. You get the idea.
I need help coming up with something (or things) to supplement the journal. I was thinking other travel books, or some (long lasting) travel accessories. Any ideas?
Also, what did you get for your grooms? I am still trying to decide if this is the best idea, so completely different suggestions welcome!
Oh! I love the journal and compass ideas! And with the compass you could put something in there about how when the weather of life gets bad, and he feels like he's lost his way, you promise to always be there to help him find it agan. Something like that.
Have you thought about getting the journal as the meaningful part of the gift and then also getting him something fun that speaks to his engineer side?
I have way too many engineer friends (and FI), and they all love techie toys. www.thinkgeek.com is my go-to place for gifts for them.
I'm getting my FH a 67 Mustand Fastback crapped out car so he can fix it up as a hobby. (I know random gift, but I figure it will allow for easy out gifts in the future like a new engine for his 30th, new leather seats for christmas) Also we can fun it ::waggles eyebrows::
I love the ideas you are getting. The compass, the journal!, oh so perfect.
I got my husband a watercolor painting from an etsy seller. I took a photo of our wedding location and she did a painting of it. With the wedding date underneath it.
beesknees, thats a really cool idea! i might use it for a birthday or anniversary present... the site we are getting married at would make a great painting! i'm searching for a compass now...
My fiance is a pianist, so I got him a piano. But I gave it to him early..
He already has a few regular pianos, but I got him a digital, that he wanted. This baby is soo nice, he can record mp3s off of it, directly from the piano to the computer. So he's been recording all the ceremony music, since he doesn't trust anyone else to play it the way he wants it. haha
We're going to have it at the venue, and it will be hooked up so that it sounds like the music is coming from it, during the ceremony. Also, if he wants to play anything during the reception, it'll be there for that. It's really easy to move too, compared to a regular piano that weighs a ton..
Your ideas are very original and very creative. Your FI is bound to be touched at how much thought you put into your choice! Nice work:)
My FI and I saw "The Bucket List" over Vday and wrote and exchanged our own lists of things we hoped to accomplish in our lifetimes. One of his was to go heli-skiing. I plan to get him a gift certificate to do that; he'd never buy it on his own because it is a bit spendy. With it, I plan to enclose a note about how our marriage is an adventure and a change to support one another's dreams.
I am also planning to tuck the gift certificate in a book of boudoir photos and to get him a groom's cake/hint about the gift to come (the skiing part;) for our RD.
We aren't getting each other any gifts but a card. Our budget is blown between the wedding & our new house. We decided our gift to one anotehr is ourselves. :-)
I'm surprising my FH with boudoir photos presented either in a manilla envelope (i.e. blackmail style) or in a plain black-paged Kolo book with photo corners.
On January 1st, I started journaling every day on a different reason why I loved him. I'm pretty sure I've repeated myself a lot, and if you look through it, you can see days when I was sick when I just wrote, "I love you because you're awesome," but I hope he'll appreciate it. Our wedding isn't until December, so I'll almost have a year of journaling done by then.
My FI is a big comics buff and we go to a lot of comic conventions. They nearly always have working comics artists who will do commissioned sketches, so I bought a blank sketchbook and have been taking it around and asking the artists to draw their favorite comic character/s doing something weddingy. I hope he likes it.
I think the journal is a great idea! What about a nice piece of luggage to supplement?
I'm going a somewhat more boring route and getting him a hockey jersey, album from my boudoir shoot, and a fun groom's cake for the rehearsal dinner.
