I didn’t realize how little I actually knew about the mens side of the whole wedding planning until we started looking for suits for them (and the FI) to wear. I figured we’d just head to Men’s Wearhouse, rent some pants, a vest, a shirt, and call it a day. I didn’t realize that they only do tux rentals, and that is so very much not what we are looking for. We weren’t really feeling the pants and vests they had available at all.
After some research online and around the ‘bee, I realized that we will probably need to buy suit seperates from JCPenny or a similar store in order to match the vision we have for what the guys will be wearing. My question is this: who pays for the suits? Do we do that, and have that count as their thank you gift? Do we do that, and still buy them a thank you gift? Do the guys themselves pay for it, like the girls do for their dresses? We figure we would need each guy to get pants, a vest, a shirt, and some form of shoes – they probably don’t even need to buy new ones – and we would at least buy the ties for each of them.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!

Typically the guys pay for their suits or tux rentals, just like the girls pay for their dresses. If you wanted to pay for them, you totally can, but then I feel like it would only be fair for you to pay for the girls too.

My thought (and what we’re doing) is that if the girls are paying for their dresses, the guys should pay for their suits/tuxes, whether they are being rented or purchased. If you pay for them, I think it would count as their gift, but it depends how much you want to spend on them. Honestly, that might be a good gift, because we are finding that it’s hard to pick something for the guys!

If the girls are paying for their own dresses, then the guys pay for theirs. I would endeavor to keep the costs relatively the same. I would not expect the men to have to exceed the cost of a tux rental by much if I were asking them to buy a suit.

The guys are paying for their own suits, just as the girls got their own dress. We tried to make it insanely easy for them (black suit with a specific shirt, brown accessories, and black shoes). We’re allowing them to get their suit wherever they’d like as long as it’s black (no pinstripes or designs), and is a 1 notch with at least 2 buttons.

We’re paying, hence we only have best man and Maid/Matron of Honor.
