I've never had one (haven't been pg), but I'm pretty sure it's just a swab.
It's not that bad, I promise! :) It's just a swab, like a Q-tip, and while it might be a little embarrassing, it certainly doesn't hurt or anything. They don't "go in" very far.
I mean really, dont we go through enough down there without having to have that thrown in too? LOL
@KellyV: So not looking forward to this. And I agree, we go through way too much stuff already.
@Mrs. Spring: But I don't wanna!
@TheFutureMcBride: Oh come on, I won't take that attitude from you! You've given birth! What's a little swab?
It's really not that bad, guys, I promise. Like I said, embarrassing but, um, so is having some little teeny bopper nursing student give you a catheter (and if you get an epidural, you also get the endless joy of catheter :). You can do this!
What's this??
(Googles "Group B Strep Test")
Ahhhh! I have my 35 week appt today. :(
Maybe I can put it off till next time.
@Mrs. Spring: its the...ummmm...lower part of the swab Im uncomfortable with. The vagnal swab, whatever.
You guys are killing me! C'mon, it feels like they just wiped you after going to the bathroom; that's literally as far "in" as they go. :) In other news, though, remember the enema thread from a few weeks ago? That made me shudder. This? This is easy.
Honestly, they just barely touch your bum, it's not like they poke it in there, just the outside.
@Mrs. Spring: I don't care. I'm being a bigger baby about this birth.
@camrie: I didn't know what it was either until earlier today. Now I'm dreading it. Good luck.
@Mrs. Spring: what enema thread!!!
And you both made me feel better, I was thinking there was digging going on down there lol
@TheFutureMcBride: Bwahahahah! Alright, you get a free pass this once, I guess. Maybe you can ask your doctor to swab your husband instead? I'm not sure they'll take the substituion, but it's worth a try.
@KellyV: DON'T READ THE ENEMA THREAD! People were discussing whether they would have an enema before giving birth so they wouldn't poop during labor. Horrible stuff.
And by the way, most women poop at some point during labor. But most of us do it on the toilet long before we get to the hospital/on the delivery table. It's nature's way of preparing you for pushing. :) You're welcome.
@Mrs. Spring: LOL Ill take your word for it. That doesnt bother me so much. If I deliver vaginally (probably not as of now) if I poop, I poop. Thats whatever. Its the swab going IN that makes me squirmy. That being done in a medical setting...just no. No thanks lol
@KellyV: "In a medical setting..." Maybe your doctor will let you take it home? :)
@Mrs. Spring: I like this idea. He deserves some kind of tourture during all this besides listening to me whine about being tired and in pain. As for the poop, totally for pooping as soon as the body says "hey, go to the bathroom."
You guys make me laugh!
And how did I miss the enema thread?! I'm not pregnant, so i'm definitely finding and reading it!
@Mrs. Spring: LOL just sayin, everything is always more uncomfortable when youre spread eagle on the table, feet in stirrups lol. Like, I wouldnt be into it if my husband at that moment said to me "I must have you now." hahaha! No-too medical! Thats what I meant lol
@Mrs. Spring: Yikesy! I think it would be WAY less horrible to poop than to get an enema, seriously if you poop it's over with but an enema is a PROCESS.
@camrie: Plus, can you imagine dealing with contractions at the same time? (!)
I just had the GBS test two weeks ago, and really it was nothing... minus the fact that it was an intern that did it who seemed more uncomfortable than I was ... I didn't know what the test was for and when I asked he explained to me that it's a test for a "bug that lives in your bum, but only girls' bums, not in boys' bums." I couldn't help but laugh and the nurse that was there with him looked reeeeeally unimpressed, ha ha!
It's quick and it really is just a swab "around", they don't insert it! Compared to the pushing on my belly to feel where the baby is at every appointment, I'd take that any day (I find that pushing hurts! Am I alone in that?!?).
The GBS test is the least of your worries by that point in your pregnancy :)
Had to come back and post. Just had this test today and it's way less invasive than a pap. Just a quick q-tip swab externally - no big deal, don't be scared. :)
Just thought Id let you all know - had this done yesterday, and it really was nothing. Actually for me, there was no "butt part," just a vaginal swab. Except he used a speculum and I think maybe used a frickin RAKE to gather the culture lol. It was uncomfortable. but nothing like I was expecting.
Also had my first cervical exam. I totally get now why women want as few of these as possibl during labor. It sucked
@KellyV: Glad it was easy for you :) I remember picturing it like they were going to stick a q-tip up my behind...not the case AT ALL! Just a little swab, super quick and painless!
Oh it wont be bad! Its just a swab, and it doesnt hurt! Dont get freaked out about it! It will be fine. :)
@Sulli301: LOL thats what I was expecting. And my husband was there with me, and was giggling bc I told him "shoot! Do you know what theyre gonna do to me today?!" and they didnt lol. He did cringe when he saw the speculum though, like WTF is THAT thing?! Serious. They need to come up with something new. Those things look like medieval torture devices...
@KellyV: My husband CRACKED me up everytime because he was always quite and didn't SAY anything but his eyes/facial expressions said it all!
Thanks for coming back and posting. I have my test on July 11th.... eeekkk.
How long did it take for results?
I had mine today, it was no big deal at all.
@SecretName: She said they won't even call me when I get the results since I'm there once a week now anyway and it doesn't matter if it's positive or negative, they wouldn't have me do anything anyway until I'm in labor. They'll just tell me at my next apt.
You know I'm trying to remember if I even had the test done with my son. I don't think I did, I do know that I had the antibiotics in my IV just in case (he came earlier then expected).
I've had so many cervical exams this time that one more isn't gonna kill me. It's kinda typical for me now, lay back, you'll feel a little pressure, that's my fingers. Ugh...with hubby in the room! Fun times I tell ya.
@SecretName: No idea. I think like artbee, they wont tell me unless Im positive, and Im at weekly appointments now so Ill prob find out at the next one. They dont do anything except give you an IV of antibiotics once you are in labor, so theres no need for a rush on the results
@StbHisMrs: if he was early, you might not have. They dont do them until at least 35 weeks, and most doctors wait a bit later than that. Ugh, I just had the one cervical exam and I do NOT want another one. It sucked

Soooo kind of an uncomfortable topic to discuss, but really I am looking for some feedback. For moms or moms to be who have been through it....how bad is the Group B Strep test? I know its typically done between 35-37 weeks (thanks to some research by a buddy bee here) so I have some time, but it sounds awful...
