That's so cool! And inspiring - I guess living in the city's not an excuse anymore? Keep us updated!
Well I live in the country lol.. But I was very weary with the snakes, rabbits, and moles in my backyard.. so I wanted to try this first. Ill try and keep a weekly journal of it.
that's such a good idea! personally i couldn't do that, cause i love being outside and busting my ass on a huge garden, since thats an option for me, but thats really creative of you! definitely keep us updated!
living in the city isn't an excuse, lol. you can have a container garden! i have like no backyard (doing the huge garden at someone elses house) and i still plan on doing a container garder. they are super easy!
That's awesome! Good for you! I got a head start on my garden too in one of the Burpee greenhouse thingers (lavender, parsley, oregano, tomato), and I'll be moving them outside later. Do you plan on moving them out later or will they be staying inside?
I always thought they needed some amount of sunlight? We don't have a balcony or window ledge or anything, and the cats would chew right through whatever we put on the radiator ledge by our bedroom window.
My FI and I have been seriously discussing the practicalities of going organic. He battled stomach cancer and has PUD (Peptic Ulcer Disease) and controlling his diet is key to him staying healthy. We want to have a small garden plot tilled in the backyard and then plant a lot of the veggies you mentioned in addition to several others. We think that if we combine fresh from our garden with "organic" from the store...we shouldn't take too much of a financial hit.
I think it's great that so many people are starting to grow their own fresh produce....keep us updated as your "garden" grows.
Make sure to transplant a LOT when it starts growing like crazy over the summer! I didn't do it enough last year and only got 4 tomatoes out of my harvest.
Also, basil is amazingly easy to grow, I highly recommend that and banana peppers! Zucchini does well in a slightly larger pot!
I love container-gardening, but since I'm moving in May, I don't really have time to get going. What a bummer!
That is AMAZING! Good for you! I live in the city in a condo, and my friend and I asked a neighbor who wasn't using their backyard garden plot if we could plant there - they were so awesome and agreed! We did this last summer and it was soooo nice to have organic veggies available all the time. It was a great year for tomatos, because it was so hot and dry. Good luck with your garden!
that's amazing. I swear I have a black thumb. For aloe vera thriving on neglect...I probably killed it already.
@Minutiae- I honestly will probably keep them inside..
@lilyfaith- They do, which is why they are near the window. During the day I have the blinds open, but the seran wrap and the top of the smaller container act as a green house and keep whatever sunlight comes in, inside of the pot/container. The smaller container once I get seedlings will be individually transplanted to pots similar to the other ones.
@laboroflove- thats what I have been reading. To only keep the strongest vines/plants once they start budding.

Ive been doing alot of research and it is possible. I am growing my own veggie garden because I have been really trying to eat healthier. After my car accident I now have arthritis (and im only 25) so being overweight (18 months of steroids and not being able to do much during rehab will do it to ya) is just not good for my health or my bones/joints. I started this 3 days ago and have been reading up on this a lot and the green seran wrap over the big pots are supposed to be almost like a greenhouse effect. The smaller pan-looking pot is a small greenhouse as well. In my garden I have: two types of squash, two types of cucumbers, strawberries, eggplant, snap peas, sweet banana peppers, two types of bell peppers, and carrots. I still have radishes and watermelon I havent planted yet.
