We're on the first leg of the splitting the holidays trip. We've been at his mom's house since Saturday night. I've been okay at staying away from the cookies, etc, but what's killing me is not getting any exercise! I'm a gym go-er, like every day, and I'm definately addicted to those endorphins. No exercise in the last 4 days means I'm very cranky, irritable, and feel terrible about my body. Not. Cool.

They live out in the country, but along a very busy road. There isn't an opportunity for walking or running here. There isn't a gym in the small town they live near. Does anyone have a good suggestion for how to squeeze in some physical activity before I lose my mind?

is there a local high school with an outdoor track? if nothing else, just clear a spot on the floor and do pushups and situps. or you could volunteer to do any shoveling or yard work.

Push ups, tricep dips, squats, lunges, skipping perhaps? Also, get a really good ab workout in :)

Do the stuff that doesn't take up space!  Lunges, Planks, Crunches... And in between do a minute of jumping jacks or high steps.

Can you buy a workout DVD at Target and just get in 30 mins a day? I've heard really good things about Jillian Michael's 30-day shred, and it's only 10 bucks at Target.

Bring a DVD or two along? Could you rent one from the library and bring a small dvd player?

a workout DVD is a good idea. I might be able to do a pilates DVD on my laptop in the guest room. Part of the issue is that I feel so stuck when we visit; we always take FI's truck, and I'm not insured on it yet. I'd pay $15 a day for a gym membership if there was a gym within 20 minutes of here!

... but maybe after 5 days with the inlaws I'm just stir crazy after spending 5 days with the inlaws? Yell

can you do some crunches, jumping jacks, lift weights, etc?  Maybe in the room you are sleeping in so that they don't all think you are crazy running around the house doing these things?

Can you suggest taking a hike in the woods?  Or is that not possible where they are?

Otherwise the other suggestions sound great - doing pushups/planks/dips/etc. are all quiet and you won't have to run around the house!  This could also be a good time to get some stretching/yoga in!

Do they have stairs in the house? Could you run up and down them in addition to doing a DVD?

Do they have cable? Most cable companies have an exercise channel, or if you're really lucky, Exercise On Demand (has some great workouts)! You could also use YouTube videos - sounds weird, but if you have a laptop, there are a ton of exercise videos on YT.

I am a daily gymer as well so I totally understand your frustration. I know its sounds odd but sometimes I get nervous about vacations because of the lack of exercise. But working out just makes me feel better. Any chance there is a Target near you where you could resistance bands or a jump rope? They make for a great workout. If not I would do some major lunges, jumping jacks, squats, sit ups, knee lifts, push ups, etc. Anything to just get your heart rate up and some strenghting moves. Most importantly just remember to have fun (I know it's easier said then done) but it is the holidays.

I feel your pain! My fiance and I are spending a week at his brother and wife's house. Add to that the fact that fiance's father is on this trip with us. And there's no gym nearby, no exercise equipment that's set up (they just moved in a month ago), and I've been doing less well with staying away from the cookies. Plus, my future brother-in-law and I have had a bottle of wine almost every night. And I haven't been drinking enough water.

Finally this morning I secluded myself off into a spare bedroom and did some exercises and moved around for about 20 minutes. It's not what I would have liked, but at least it's something.

I am a little stir crazy at my ILs as well!  I work out everyday and it's so weird not to be at the gym while I'm here.  Add the holiday sweets and junk food to that and I'm feeling gross!  I usually try to run while I'm here, but they have so much snow, it's not really an option.  This morning, I did some crunches, push-ups and lunges, just so I could do something.  I have a couple of yoga MP3 workouts on my iPod, so I might try to do that tomorrow.

My future SIL today suggested that we take the baby for a hike on a trail tomorrow. I am thrilled! :)
