for a variety of reasons (mainly $ and time) Darling Husband and I decided to postpone out honey moon until this winter. We are trying to decide on places to go and he seems to be pretty stuck on Guatemala. Just wondering if any bees have been there or would have good suggestions on things that absolutely can’t be missed. He has mentioned surfing, I would like to see ruins… Very basic stages of planning.

My sister has spent a fair amount of time there. The Lake Antigua area is supposed to be amazing and not too-too touristy.

- Wedding: July 2013 - Antigua, Guatemala
I lived in Guatemala for 2 years and am actually getting married there this July 2013!
You will love it! I would not spend too much time (if any) in Guatemala city…as it’s quite dangerous these days. Outside of the city, you will find safe, interesting, unique places to visit.
Three musts would be:
Spend a few days in Antigua. A colonial city about 45 minutes from the airport. It’s charming and one of the most romantic places I have ever been. (this is why we are getting married there) 🙂 I can recommend a few hotels if you’d like from low end to splurge. If you are going to splurge, it should be at Mason Panza Verde which is one of my absolute favourite hotels. Their restaurant is breathtaking and they have live music on Thursdays and Fridays that can’t be missed. From Antigua, you can do many day trips…you can visit a coffee plantation, markets, a chocolate factory, climb a volcano, etc.
See Tikal-it’s only a short flight from GUA airport and it’s amazing. There are a few flights every day with Taca (an El Salvadorian airline).
Go to Lake Atitlan-simply beautiful and relaxing. You can visit many little towns that surround the lake as well.
