Well, the DNA results are in! Sam is a mix, so the results are Intermediate (Intermediate means that he is at least 25% of his DNA matches the breeds listed.)
And Sam’s DNA matches:
The American Staffordshire Terrier:
(which although is TECHNICALLY the cousin of the “Pitt Bull”, I believe he can still be considered a Pitt Bull breed–Pitt lovers feel free to correct me, I could be wrong)
Lol, the DNA test was entertaining, and we love Sam either way! Thanks to everyone who voted on his breeds! It was very entertaining!

That was fast too! I definitely would never have guessed the pointer.

Amstaffs and Pitt Bulls are very similar. In fact, the UKC considers them all the same, but AKC is a bit different. I’m not very knowledgable on the subject of their differences, but often Amstaffs are just generally called pitts by the general public.

Wow… I see the BullMastif but no boxer??? I voted for boxer.

May I ask what kind of DNA test you used? I also have NOOOOO idea what my dog is.

I can definitely see the bullmastiff! what a beautiful doggy!

Apparently no boxer, we were SHOCKED about that part! And the only thing I can see pointer in is his whip like tail! lol
The type of DNA test we used was through http://www.wisdompanel.com/ which detects 170+ AKC Breeds (which may account for the lack of actual “pittbull”)

Just an FYI, it is PIT bull, not pitt bull. A lot of pit owners get touchy over that, (like the dalmatian people get upset if it’s spelled dalmation, and the shepherd people get upset if you call it a shephard kind of thing). Hehe.
Anyway, I definitely agree with the Am Staff/Mastiff part, but POINTER?! I don’t see a single trait in there. In the picture you posted, he only looks slightly more jowly than the purebred Am Staff. Definitiely a bully breed though.
And yeah, that was pretty fast, unless you had already sent the results back when you posted the first time! No matter what he is, Sam is a very handsome boy!

As far as I know, “pit bull” is not technically a breed. It is a term that people use to describe dogs like the AmStaff, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso, etc. That being said, I refer to my two girls as pit bulls. =P An American Staffordshire Terrier is definitely a pit bull! That’s so funny that he’s mixed with Pointer though!

The swab got sent 4/23 so it was a VERY quick turn around when they said it could be 3 weeks!

Sage, it my understanding that “Pit Bull” is used to describe many breeds in the molosser family, like you said. There is an American Pit Bull Terrier, but to my knowledge it is not recognized as a breed by the AKC. AmStaffs, APBTs, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are the three breeds most commonly called pit bulls.
