I would strongly suggest against A/B listing people.  It’s very complicated, and feelings will get hurt.  There’s no way to ensure people will reply early enough with nos to be able to send out other invites.

What we did was set up our guest list in a spread sheet with ‘categories’.  First we had a column with my initial or FIs initial.  Then we did aunts/uncles, cousins, parent, sibling, friend, work friends, parents friends.  It helped us to cut people from many categories as well as not forget some in others (FI has a LOT of first cousins). 

If our wedding was in a different location, I would have broken down ‘friends’ even more to things like college friends, home friends, whatever.

It helped us pare it down to what we could actually invite.
