One affordable option you could look into is the Aveda Institute in Gallery Place. The salon is staffed with students who are still taking classes, but I have had very good results and have been getting my hair cut and colored (red) there for almost 3 years (haircut $18 and color is around $40). My stylist was asking me about my wedding and told me about their updo and make up service. My wedding is much closer to Baltimore, so the location doesn't work for me the day of the wedding, but I am going to do a hair trial with them (it's only $30 for a formal updo) so I can get an idea of what I want and take some pictures.
I used to get my hair cut at Salon Cielo in Dupont. I would always go on a Saturday and there'd always be brides & bridal parties getting their hair done.
I had a lot trouble finding a salon, but Parlour, on U Street, is fabulous. My haircuts are usually $65, but I've found that's pretty standard here.

Hello ladies,
Any recommendations for a stylist? Ideally, I'd love for the salon to be close to Dupont or Cleveland Park, but it doesn't have to be. I have very curly, short hair, and I'm hoping to have it softened into large Marilyn Monroe-ish waves. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg, but I want it to look good and beat August humidity!
Thanks!
