Everytime I see recaps, I see that the hair and makeup is done before the wedding dress is put on. Why? I would imagine the hair will get messed up if it’s a pull over the head kind of dress (buns might get loosened) and the makeup might get transferred onto the dress while putiing it on, no? I would imagine that I would put the dress on before that gets done. I am slightly confused by the order.

All the dresses I’ve tried on I stepped into so it doesn’t even go near my face/hair..also I wouldn’t want my dress on while doing hair/makeup with fear that something would get on it while it’s being done.

Plus, could you imagine sitting for 2 hours in a big poufy ballgown? And the hairdresser having to work 3 feet away because the dress is the way?

I’m a hair stylist and normally when I have a bride we do the hair , then the make-up before the dress only because 1. Hairspray etc can get on your dress and leave a residue,2. Same for make up. You don’t want any spots or markings on your dress prior to pictures. It’s easier for the bride and bridal party to wear button up shirt so it’s easier to not mess the hair or make up, up. Also it would be harder depending on the gown to cover it up to ensure no markings are made.

Fall out from makeup would be my biggest concern doing makeup after. You could EASILY get makeup on your pretty white dress.
Also, hair and makeup is typically done a few hours before the ceremony, and you don’t want to wear you dress for that long before the ceremony/photos in case you get it dirty.
The dress won’t mess up your hair or makeup as long as you’re careful.

I’ve never seen a wedding gown you didn’t need to step into.

It’s just that I have never seen my mom “step” into anything before except pants, Skirts and dresses would be put over her head! Weird, I know.

I just had the bridesmaids hold mine in front of me and I stepped into it. Also, I had airbrush makeup done and can only imagine the horrors that could possibly happen if I’d had it done while wearing the dress!

@happyface: If you absolutely have to pull it over your head — use this trick. Take a flat sheet and cover your head and hair with it….kinda like Casper the ghost. 🙂 Then pull the dress over the sheet — or something smaller but thin like a sheet. Practice doing this before the big day so you get the hang of it and can do it without squishing the hair. Hope that helped!!

I’m my experience, the best way to avoid makeup transfer with and over the head approach is to put the dress over while you are facing the back of the open dress, and then spin the dress so everything is in the right place. The fully open back gives you much more space to maneuver and keep your makeup and hair where they were intended to be placed.

Have to agree with the ladies above. Never seen grown that you couldn’t just step in and to be in your gown while hair and makeup is being done, let alone you might want to snack during that time would not be recommended.
