I was wondering whether people have opinions / experiences with getting your hair and make up done by somebody who specialized in weddings and special events vs. going to a local salon to get it done.

As far as I can tell:

    Salon pros: significantly cheaper
Salon cons: I won't be able to look at portfolios of the people working at the salon until I make an appointment for a trial and come in; possibly may not know as much about what photographs well?

Hair / Make up artist pros: specialized experience
Hair / Make up artist cons: much more expensive, and I'm not a fan of the overly "done" look advertized on many of their websites.

    Thanks!

There is a salon in my hotel that can easily do hair and makeup, but I am probably going to hire a separate person anyway! The reason is because I have heard terrible things about this salon for both service and results. Like everyone who writes a review claimed the makeup was 'old lady' makeup and made them feel like a clown. I am, however, sending some BM's and Mom's there to get everything done just so I can have a little peace and quiet.

I went with freelance artists and could not have been happier. However, my experience was different from your pros and cons. These freelance artists were significantly cheaper than going to a salon. I spent about 40% of what high end salons would have charged me.

I also disagree with the freelance artists having more experience than salon artists. As long as you do your research, I'm sure you can find those who are highly qualified.

One other pro of hiring freelance artists was that I could pick and choose the make up artist and the hair artist according to my preferences, where as in salons, you normally hire them together.
