Our best-man's wife happens to be my hairdresser, so she will be doing my wedding day hair.  (Yay friendors!)  So yesterday I finally got up the courage to email her about her pricing.  She will be doing my hair before the wedding in my hotel room.  I also want to give my bridesmaids (there are 4 of them) the option of having their hair done (paid for by me), and also *maybe* the flower girls.  Well, she came back with a price of $650 -- $150 for me, including a hair trial, $100 for each BM, and $50 for each of our 2 flower girls.  Eek!  A little more than I was planning on spending.  I hate to try to negotiate with her, since she is a friend afterall, but I'm not sure that I can afford all of that.  Does this sound comparable to prices that the rest of you have been seeing for wedding day hair?  Also, do I need to tip our friend?  My thought was no, since she will be coming to us, and we won't be going to a salon, she will get to pocket all of the $$ --> no tip necessary.  Is this correct thinking?  I certainly don't want to rob her of a tip, if she's expecting one.

That's a lot! BM hair is usually around $60-$85 in So Cal.  The bride is a little more plus about $35 to $45 for a trial (I'm thinking $85 - $100).  (Each time I've been a bridesmaid the stylist has come to us so this is not an in-salon price which is often even cheaper.)  So I would say $150 could almost be reasonable for the bride, but $100 for a BM??  No way!!  You would think a friend would be cheaper than average!  That's a tricky situation though...maybe just tell her what you were planning on spending.

I can't remember the tipping etiquette on this one...

I don't have any help about the tip part unfortunately, my guess is that she's probably hoping to be tipped, though.  I think $150 for bridal hair including trial sounds about standard for around here, but $100 per BM is too high!  I'd say $80/updo or less would be more reasonable.  Maybe let her know what you had budgeted and see if you can work a deal for that?

I would call some salons in the area of your wedding to see what their pricing is for comparison. Is your friendor from your area or the area of the wedding? If she's from CA, I would get prices from both sides. Friendors are great, but if you can get a better deal from a professional and you are comfortable with them, then what is the perk of using a friendor?

And I might think that a tip is still expected. Don't assume she doesn't expect a tip too. But $150 seems extreme to me unless she is hand weaving extensions into your hair. Is she planning on charging you per trial? In my MOH's wedding two years ago, I paid $90 for an updo with clip in extensions at an upscale salon.

Yeah, I was sort of hoping she would give us a deal, since she is a good friend afterall.  She said that this is her standard pricing.  I also agree that $150 for me, including a trial doesn't sound too unreasonable, but $100 per bridesmaid definitely sounds like a lot.  I already know that my sister (MOH) just wants her hair down with some loose waves.  This sound a lot less complicated to me than a full updo, so it seems like she should be charging us a bit less.  Our friend also said that these prices include her travel fees.  Well... shouldn't she not be charging travel fees, since she will be coming to the wedding anyways (she is the best man's wife).  I'm going to try to draft a carefully worded email to her with some of these issues...

I'm getting married in Hawaii. It's $190 for me for airbrushed makeup, lashes and hair. It's $95 for a trial run before hand. It's $135 for each person hair and makeup. Plus I have to tip the stylist too. Everything expensive in HI though and this is the going rate it seems.

Well I would have to say that I would need to know what length of hair you have  and how intricate of an updo you are having...

IF that is just for hair  and no makeup that is crazy ridiculous. I hope that is suppose to say $65 to $100 lol ....  I  might let her do your hair just bc she will come to you.... But i would get the girls done elsewhere.... besides you dont want the one person doing everyone... IF SO GET YOURS DONE FIRST.

As a hairdresser i can tell you 7 sets of wedding hair back to back is too much... Expecially if they are all intricate... she will get sloppier as she goes along because she will get tired and want to be done.

I personally think the prices expecailly for your bridesmaids and flower girls hair sounds ridiculous.. For the BM i would probably do around 45-70 dollars depending on the hair length & amount of detail ... and for the girls unless they just have really long hair i would say $30-$45

But then again I am just a Hairdresser in Northeast TN not CA ..... but my clients would laugh in my face if I tried to charge them that

And yes she will  probably expect a tip

Do you think that she is adding in the cost of coming to the location to do the hair?  I would ask other salons about their pricing to see if it is reasonable.  If you can't afford it, you might want to think about having the BMs do their own hair, which would be fine as long as you aren't looking for an intricate updo.

I see you are getting married in Bar Harbor – I’m getting married in Portland. :)

I am personally paying right about $150 for my wedding day hair, not including the trial, and not including makeup. My MOH hair, day of, will be $100, makeup separate. That also doesn’t include a tip.

You can call other salons, but if you are getting married in Bar Harbor in the summer, I would expect all to be about the same price range.
