I literally just came on the boards to ask the same question! :) I have my trial this weekend and am wondering if I should tip... if anyone else has any thoughts I'd love to hear 'em! Mine are also not part of a salon so I'm wondering how that affects things.
I would say no tip, since they're trying to display their talent to you during the trial and you'll be tipping day of.
Yes, definitely tip. Make-up and hair people expect tips. I researched this too and got it confirmed on several sites.
I would definitely tip them. Regardless if they are coming to your house or not, they are providing you a service
Thanks for all the advice everyone. I did tip because they were totally sweet and I wanted them to be happy to be coming back to do my day of. However, you don't tip salon owners and these ladies are working for themselves, setting their prices and getting the full payment. So I still don't know if it is mandatory, but I thought you guys were right and that it would be a good idea. Thanks!
You did the right thing! You should always tip for hair and make up because it is a service.
My sister is a practicing cosmetologist and when I asked about this she told me that a small tip (doesn’t have to be huge!) is always appreciated…it will make the person more willing to go the extra mile for you.
Also, most people in the business get all of what you pay them for anyways. In a lot of salons, they get 100% of what you pay them, and they pay rent for their station. Obviously, some work on commission (they give the owner a percentage of their earned money), but that is mostly seen in lower class places or for new employees.

Hi all, I'm hoping one of you super helpful people can advise me... I have a hair stylist and a makeup artist coming to my house to do my trial. I will be paying for the trials and signing a contract for day of services and paying those deposits. Should I be tipping in this situation (for the trial)? In a salon, I definitely would, but since these are individuals and the payment is going straight to them, I wasn't sure. Thanks!
