Hand Cancellation

posted 3 months ago in Beehive

Hive,

I have been sending invitations through the mail today and yesterday. Tomorrow will be day 3. I requested hand cancellation and the were more than happy to do it for me. They also told me they would still go through the machines.

An invitation arrived and a bridesmaid took a picture of the envelope and invitation for me. The envelope was pretty beat up, but the invitation (pocketfold) held up alright.......Still, it's not ideal of course.

Have you heard of them going through the machines anyway? Two people at two different post offices told me this.

Mine were hand-cancelled but went through the machines anyway. =( The local ones looked pretty though!

why does it matter? isn't the invite the only thing that matters?

I was going to have mine hand cancelled (something I learned on WB) but the lsdy at the PO said that it wouldn't matter because it had to go through a machine. So I just happily sent them on their way and didn't care if the envelopes got marked on. I didn't need to add that to my stress.

superstar and jma19,

It effected the actual invitation, not just the envelope. Not just being a little bent but crinkled and everything very obviously.

Apparently, other hive workers have been told the same thing. At first, I just thought it was something the PO workers were telling me so that they could get me to change my mind about having them hand cancel everything.

Thanks!

I think that the only way to prevent it going through the machines is to make it non-machinable, either via size or thickness, or to send it as a parcel.  My invitations were actually non-machinable due to size and shape (and designated as parcels due to the stiffness).  They pretty much all showed up looking really, really good.  Of course you pay for it in postage...

Hi JCM9608,
Not sure where you mailed them from but this was the run down I got from the NYC post when I had mine hand cancelled a month ago.... You have to go to the main post office in your city for hand cancelling otherwise they will still go thru the  machines. In New York, its the one on 8th Ave and 30th st. I first went to the Grand Central Post Office near my office and they said that if I did it there, there was still a risk of them going through the machine at the main post office. When I went to the main post office they were (surprisingly) more than happy to do it and even excited about the invites BUT it was only free for the first 50 invites. I mailed out 160 and the difference only cost me $5. Did you pay for the hand canceling at all? In theory you could go back and ask for a refund just to make a point... I'm so sorry they didn't come through for you on this. If its not too late try to find out where the main post office is in your area and hopefully you will find a sympathetic worker... I came armed for battle but was plesantly surprised. The post office can be a nightmare sometimes!!
