I'm not sure where you're planning on buying your dress, but there's a very good chance you won't have it right away. I waited about 4 months for mine to come in, which I think is standard if you go through a bridal shop. Check with the shop, though, because they may have some recommendations for you based on your dress.
I was told to hang mine so that the train was not touching the floor (so I hung it from the top of a bookshelf). If I'd had it for longer and had to store it before getting my alterations and having it pressed, I would have scooped the train onto a second hanger to help distribute the weight.
Mine is drapped over a chair because there is very heavy beading on it
Mine didn't have any beading/crystals/rhinestones on it, so I was told hanging it wouldn't harm it at all -- and it was fine after hanging for about six months between coming in, alterations and the wedding day!
Mine is just hanging in my future in-laws' closet... stored in a breathable garment bag. I still need to get it altered and fitted, and I check on it often. It's still all good. :)
Mine is hanging. You could probably lay it down and then hang it after you get it pressed. Ideally, I think you want to hang it so that the train falls straight down (doesn't crease) after pressing it.
my dress is coming next week and it has a good size train. i guess ill hang it for now.... 1 more year left haha.
my bridal shop is keeping my dress until all alterations are done, once I go for my last fitting, they will steam and press it, than i'm supposed to pick it up the week of the wedding, and hang it up till then. I don't think you have to worry too much about it until it's been steamed and pressed.
Oh no! Mine is hanging and is very heavy. 8 more months until the wedding. Maybe I should have my mother lay it down.
Mine is hanging...never heard about laying it down. But the beading is minimal and the weight isn't too bad. I did double-loop the dress loopy things like they have them in the store...does that count?

I'll be buying my dress soon and i read that you should lay down the dress instead of hanging it up so that the weight of the dress doesnt ruin it (not sure how)?
my dress will be pretty heavy (heavy satin with lace and beading)! and i wont be getting married for another year!!
how did you store your dress?
