Hey admin bees! Happy Administrative Professionals Day!
I work in the public sector, so I didn’t get anything. Don’t want to waste the taxpayer’s money! 🙂 The first year it happened, I was super bummed, because in the private sector, I always got flowers, See’s candy, and an expensive lunch (either catered or at a restaurant). But I’ve been in the public sector for 3 years now, so I’m used to it.
Anyone else get anything good?

fancymichelle: haha I never got anything when I was an admin. It was sort of like shhhh if we don’t acknowledge it, it doesn’t exist. At one place I got a $5 starbucks gift card for my birthday.
Gotta wonder why admins need a special day. Maybe because they’re generally underpaid, underappreciated, and overworked? I mean, I’ve never heard of a professional engineer’s appreciation day, have you? 😛
Now that I’m the business owner it’s business owner appreciation day everday!

fancymichelle: I’m the administrator’s assistant and the only employee at a weathly private medical office. I was lucky to get a ‘good morning’ forget a ‘thanks for doing all the work’ or a gift. Ugh.

I work in the public sector also. I bought the two secretaries in my office a plant and a card. They are not even my secretaries but they help me a lot and I appreciate them. Our director bought them flowers, a pear tart, and a gift certificate to a nice restaurant in town. It’s not tax payer money. It’s his money and I paid for my gifts to them with my own money as well. It didn’t cost me a whole lot and the services they provide really make my workplace better. I’m sorry that you didn’t receive any gifts. I hope your co-workers can find another way to show appreciation for you if they are concerned with the monetary values. I know some people think that days like this are silly, but I like that they remind me to stop and be appreciative of what is around me. Happy administrative professionals day.

fancymichelle: Boo on not getting anything! That’s lame. 🙁
I am an administrator (I do marketing/manage a team who oversees the school’s admin processes) for a public school and I bought my team some chocolates/goodies. They really don’t get thanked enough and it is sometimes a little more frustrating because we make a big deal out of teacher appreciation week. Not that we shouldn’t because teachers are great…but a lot of times people for that admin helps make the school run as well. I also got some flowers from a co-worker, so that felt good 🙂

Momololo: That’s really nice of you and your director! Mmmm – a pear tart sounds delicious!
bmo88: Yay flowers!
KateriPetrie: Chocolate sounds yummy right now! 😀
springbride23: That sucks! 🙁 They could at least be polite!!
turnanewleaf: The first Secretaries Day was in 1952. Historically, secretaries and administrative assistants were overworked and underpaid. It’s just a 62 year old tradition. And honestly, it feels kindof nice, especially when you spend all year covering for your boss who makes 3-4x as much as you, but is an idiot and can’t do a damn thing without you.

fancymichelle: They could try, yes. I think they just forget. Oh well! I love the type of work I do so that counts for something in the grand scheme of things.

I am in the public sector too, but we take up money between us (no taxpayer dollars are used, unless you could the fact that I am a tax payer and I used my dollars…LOL) to give our admins a small token. Plus, we do a pot luck!

My employers are great 🙂 This year I got pretty flowers, a $100 giftcard to the spa, and they’re taking me and the other admin girl to lunch on Friday.
