@jrwatkins:For vodka I suggest Grey Goose and for Tequila I suggest Patron Gold. Both are yummy and great/common brands.
I would add at least gin and whiskey. For lack of a better word, whiskey and gin are "manlier" than vodka and rum, and I think a lot of people (myself included) would be disappointed with only vodka and rum as the liquor selections.
In my opinion, you only need one kind of rum.
Basically, as long as you have the four basics (vodka, gin, rum, some type of whiskey) you should be ok, though there is definite room for expansion past that (i.e. tequila/scotch/bourbon).
I think if you have the beer and wine, you might want the vodka, rum, along with a gin ro whiskey. Even being a girl, i LOVE whiskey. Jack Daniels is a pretty standard on to go with. I don't think you need to go too far with tequilla, since you arent going to have shots, and probably won't have margaritas made, so there really wouldn't be a need for it.
For Sure Vodka as you can mix that with practically anything....OJ, Red Bull, Tonic, Cranberry, Punch...etc!
We had Grey Goose Vodka, Patron Silver Tequila, Captain Morgan's Rum & Seagram's 7 Whisky along with 5 different beer choices (Corona, Blue Moon, Heiniken, Bud Light Lime and Fat Tire) Everyone loved this selection.
We're having a limited "Bar Menu" with several choices. A margarita machine, cranberry and vodka, 7 and 7, Captain and Coke,2 types of beer, 3 types of wine and tequila shots. If someone can't find something they like to drink then they can run to the liquor store and BYOB!!!!
We also are bringing in our own drinks and have been debating what to have, but we finally decided to go with a Grey Goose Vodka, Captain Morgan's Rum, Jack Daniels, a Chardonnay, Cabernet, Coors Lt, Miller Lt, Dos XX and either Heineken or Blue Moon. And of course a bunch of mixers for the liquor.
@tracybaker: BLUE MOON!!! DO IT!! haha sorry, one of my favs! heinekin is nasty lol
The only people who can answer that are your guests, not people who won't be attending and have drastically different tastes. Poll several of your guests (family and friends) and ask what they prefer.

We're having an open-bar reception, and are able to purchase all of our own liquor. What types of hard liquor should we serve? I don't feel like making it too elaborate and complicated just the "basics". If we were to stock only vodka, white rum, and spiced rum.. would that be boring? I don't want people to be disappointed but we also have wine and beer so I am kind of thinking that if people are drinking for free they shouldn't be picky? Haha. Are there any other liquors anyone has to suggest? Maybe stocking one more type, like gin? Thanks!
(Also.. the bar will not be serving "shooters", so we don't really need any fancy liqueurs or anything)
