I'd suggest checking out http://www.wpja.com/ (the website for the wedding photojournalist association). It's a really great resource for photojournalist photographers--it's great because it not only lists by areas and where they'll photograph, a lot also list their prices.
We found our photographer through the site. I can't yet say how he was (as our wedding is still a few months away), though his work is beautiful, and we're paying about $2000 for a comprehensive package.
That may be a good resource to start with. :-)
Good luck with your searching!
Have you looked at Todd Laffler? He's awesome, and I think he starts around $4200. I definitely agree with checking out the wpja.com website as well.
Oh, and just because I'm avoiding getting ready for work, I looked up New Jersey on the site. This is the most expensive package for the first photographer listed. And his work is really beautiful.
$3600 - Complete Wedding Coverage with Album and Second Shooter
Includes a second shooter for 8 hours of coverage for multiple angles and coverage of both the bride and groom getting ready. Choose from a custom 10X10 Flush Mount Album with 20 sides or a 10X10 Coffee Table Book with 40 sides. Several sizes and styles available, add matching or unique parent albums. Also comes with a $100 print credit.
i second this site. it's a really great resource.
Call John Barone at John Barone Photography. He has a package that includes 2 shooters and an album and it is under $5k. We are not getting the album, but he is shooting our wedding- for $3k we get 2 shooters for 8 hours, including a black backdrop photo booth during the reception. Also, as a bonus, John provides digitals of all photos. He is phenomenally talented! I highly recommend him. He is based out of Philly, but shoots weddings in NJ all the time.

my photographer was incredible, and her all-day shooting package came in around $2K (not including albums, but those are basically on a "a la carte" basis)
here is her website: http://www.blueeyesphotography.net/
she lives in s. jersey (which is where my wedding was as well) but im sure she would travel if necessary
Try Kimberly Salem. She goes to NJ for weddings and is under your budget! kimberlysalemblog.com
Sean Marshall Lin! He's based out of Philly but does a lot of NJ weddings, and is even shooting our connecticut wedding next month. He's phemonenal.
Yeah, I noticed a lot of NJ photographers are asking for ridiculous amount of money so I'm focusing on the Philly photographers. Also haven't heard back from this one in NJ, but her work is really nice.
Thank you all!! Will be looking into all your suggestions!
What would I do without you bees?!?
We are using Harvey Video and Photo- they are out of Howell, NJ. We are getting 2 photographers, one album, two parent albums and all day videography for about $4200.
Hi there, you should check out John Arcara Photography....I'm so in love with his work:) Hope this helps.http://www.johnarcara.com/blog/
I'm using Kimberly Mufferi Photography. She's in VA now, but still does a lot of work in NJ and Philly.
My fiance and I booked with Blooming Studios. They are located out of Bedminster/Short Hills. We chose the mid-level package which is 3650. It includes 10 hours, 2 shooters, a 12x12 fully customizable album (and she charges by side of the page for add-ons and not image which was HUGE for us), an engagement session w/ signing book and additional prints. I think that's it. She had awesome reviews on Wedding Wire and The Knot and was super nice when we met with her. We're having our engagement session next week so I can let you know how that goes if you're still in the market for a photographer
If you're still looking, I highly recommend our photographer, Ericy Lyn. She is based in NY but has traveled throughout the Tri-State are (and beyond) to shoot. I adore her!
We're using Alex Rodrigues from W8 photography. He's in your price range.
BTW I see you're the day before me. What venue are you using?
We just got our engagement pictures back from Carla at Blooming Studios and we LOVE them! She was so easy going and laid back... absolutely awesome to work with! I cannot wait to see our wedding pictures next year.. I have nothing but confidence that they will be incredible as well.
Try Rob Grove @ www.robbgrove.com
He took our e-pics and did an AMAZING job. The shots are actually posted on his website! Good luck!
The absolute best option for a wedding photographer is Gruber Photographers! Photojounalistic style is actually their specialty and they're known as the top wedding photographers in New York. Not sure if they would fit in your budget but if they do they are simply amazing. They've shot some Alist celebrity weddings and travel all around NY and NJ for their wedding photography. Love love love them!
He did my friend's wedding and even shot Prince William and Kate's wedding in England. For your price, I think he can get you videography as well. He has a nice team of folks in NYC. Since they do a lot of other work, they do weddings pretty reasonably and only do weddings that interest them, but he is soooo nice!! My friend got a 12"x12" leather album, 5 videos, the full day at no extra cost and about 300 photos on disc (many of them enhanced and they look fabulous).
So do contact him soon! Good luck!
I used http://snapknot.com/ to find my photographer. They list by photographer's location and base rates. For 5k, you should definitely be able to get a good photographer. Good luck!

I'm having SUCH a hard time finding a photographer I love. We are trying to stay in the 5k budget which is totally do-able but every photographer I find ends up being 5k and including NOTHING but their time, no albums or anything. This is driving me crazy! I'm looking for a photojournalistic style shooter. Someone with a lot of creativity and isn't afraid to try something different. If anyone has any recos. I'd greatly appreciate them!!
