So I noticed this around the hive a bit, some avid twi-hards and twi-haters. And I've noticed some people compare these two fantasy series so I'm curious to see, who is a Potter fan, who is a Twi-hard, who is both and who is neither! :)
I personally appreciated both. I was into the Twilight books before it became a movie series and was severely disappointed by the movies - they chose an AWFUL Edward, I cannot stand Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart is just OK. Though I do like Taylor Lautner for Jacob.
Harry Potter I REALLY loved, the movies were incredible and the cast was... ahhh perfect. I might like HP a little more than Twilight, but I am a fan of both.
NOTE: TO VOTE you HAVE TO HAVE seen/read both!! :)
I love them both and I can't wait for Hunger Games. Have you read that series?
I love both! HP is part of my late teens/early 20's, and Twillight is my late 20's/early 30's.
I am like you, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Harry Potter and I like Twilight. The movies for both have been frustrating at times but Twilight is a lot more frustrating because Kristen Stewart makes me want to scream because she has no emotion in her acting!
I'm by no means a hater, but I never got into either Harry Potter or Twilight. Maybe I'm missing out, but I'm okay with it. :)
I LOVE Harry Potter! I think a lot of the reason why is because I feel like I literally grew up with the characters (how cheesy!!!). I was 12 I think when I read the first one and I stayed pretty close in age with the characters as the books came out. I felt like I was always waiting for the next HP book and I'm kind of sad now that I don't have that exciting anticipation anymore! I've read the books multiple times. I also loved the movies and thought the casting was perfect in almost every scenario.
I read Twilight when the books came out and I really liked the books a lot. I obviously didn't distinguish them as some great literary work but it was entertaining and I thought that the characters were engaging. I very strongly dislike the movies and thought the casting was horrible, I only went to see the first and the experience was not something I wanted to repeat. Sadly, I think the first movie ruined the books for me. I went to reread them and I couldn't get into it anymore. Maybe it's because I associate Kristen Stewart with Bella now or maybe because I've matured. I'm not sure.
My choice is definitely Harry Potter. It seems more timeless to me, I can see myself still getting into them in 10 or 20 years!
Harry Potter all the way! I waited in line for the last HP book but Twilight was more of a curiosity thing and I can wait for those movies to come out on DVD
@MissAsB: Exactly! I find I get way more into the HP movies because the acting is better. I like Twilight but I love the Harry Potter movies a bit more.
@Running Elley: Me too, I find that now that I've seen the Twilight movies it's hard for me to get back into the books!
I've read all the books and seen all the movies, and I like it all. I'm not really a super huge fan of any of them, though. The Twilight soundtracks are always so amazing, though!
I've read both series, and I liked both of them for different reasons. I love Harry Potter for the deep literary/philosophical themes. The books draw me in every time, and they're so well written, I really feel for the characters. Also, the movies are just amazing. Really well-done with fatastic writing and acting. I like Twilight, though, too. I take the books for what they are: fast, easy, and entertaining. Although I just don't like the movies that much, I think Taylor Lautner is cute. :) I feel like such a dirty old woman saying that, lol, but he IS cute, and he has a sweet personality in real life!
@Running Elley: Totally agree with everything you've said.
I'm going to read my kids HP as a bedtime story... I won't be doing the same for Twilight. (Though I do read them as a "beach book" or throw in a movie during a bubble bath or something like that.)
Thanks to HP, I'm getting graduate degrees in English, so I think it's pretty clear where my loyalties lie. I've written a bunch of academic papers on the series, which is more fun than work!
I love HP, I think both the books and movies are of a higher quality, but I also like Twilight bc it's entertaining. I've never seen a Twilight movie in the theater, though I saw all the HP movies in the theater. I read the HP books right as they came out, whereas I reade Twilight once they were out mostly bc I saw the first movie bc I was curious about all the hype, and then I wanted to know what happens next :)
HP all the way! Maybe I'll watch the Twilight movies once the whole hype is over, but not sure...
Now that HP is over I'm really glad we have the Hunger Games to keep me occupied. I read the books in one day each and am eagerly awaiting the movie in March!
@acingthelace:Yes! Hunger Games has been filling the HP hole in my life LOL I can't wait to see the movie!
@bookworm88:Exactly, I'll for sure read my kids HP and I'm definitely looking forward to it!
I need to check out this Hunger Games after hearing everyone talk about them.
And yes I will read HP to my kids too!
I LOVE Harry Potter - both the books and movies. I actually can't imagine not growing up with Harry Potter, always waiting for the next book and the next movie.. I'm kind of sad it's over! I feel like I learned so much reading Harry Potter and that it's a great book for both kids and adults. The writing just makes it really beautiful and still easy to read (for the most part), while the story is thought out so well.. I'm just really in love with JK Rowling :D
Never been much into Twilight. I didn't read the books, and didn't see the movies. From what I've heard, it's not the type of book that would entertain me, and the type of thinking that I want to support.
Everyone can have their own opinion, and I can't say anything about grown women deciding to read Twilight or watch the movies, but I feel like young girls might be too easily impressed with the book and I'm scared they're gonna get twisted views on relationships. On the other hand, if they read it with adult supervision, I think they could benefit from how the story shows the dynamic in Bellas relationships with her Dad, Edward, etc.
I really like both, but I like Harry Potter more! I can read and reread Harry Potter books countless times and i think the casting and the movies are perfect. The Twilight books are good, but I agree with some PPs that the movies are okay (definitely getting better as they go!) but the casting is just kind of meh. The movies (especially the first two) could have been SO much better.
I'm a total Pothead. lol.
I started reading Harry Potter when the first book came out when I was in like 5th or 6th grade. The characters were the same age as me and I feel like we all grew up together. I used to pre-order the books and DEVOUR them in the first day I had them. I have read every book in the series several times. DH and I own first-edition hardbacks of all 7 books (both of us, so we have 2 sets) and Harry Potter is definitely something I want to share with my own children.
As for comparing the two... I mean, that's kind of like comparing Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. (Yep, just added another level of nerdiness to this post.) There is NO comparison.
To me, Twilight is badly written, has awful 2D characters and I think a 13-year-old fanfiction writer could have sat down with an outline of the story and we would have the same result...
It took me forever to get into HP, but I totally love them now. Even though I recognize real problems with the writing--the storytelling is topnotch, and the worldbuilding is amazing.
I cannot stomach Twilight (no offense! Don't hate!). I think I watched the first movie once, and I just couldn't get into it at all. Plus, one of my favorite lit professors in college liked to talk about the rule-bound nature of fiction, and he always used the example of vampires. Although fictional, they act in accordance with and basically confirm all the "rules" of vampires. Obviously the Twilight vampires break all the rules, and I'm just not down with that.
@LuckyJuls:, @acingthelace:, & @Running Elley: what is Hunger Games? If it's comparable to HP I'm IN!! haha :) I'll need something to get me through this cold winter lol
@Running Elley: Yeah, definitely agree with your whole post. I feel like I could be best friends with Emma Watson IRL, she is possibly my favorite celebrity - she is to down-to-earth, grounded, sweet and absolutely adorable - and she's only a little younger than me ;) Sadly my parents had the misconception while I was growing up that HP was very much-so like witchcraft, and I wasn't allowed to read/watch it. So I didn't get into it until I was 18 but once I did I LOVED it and do kinda feel like I grew up with it anyway. I "educated" them on it as an adult lol
@maymorganite: Yeah, definitely a good point. I was 18 when I read the Twilight books, so I was over that age of influence, but looking back on it, I think I might have a hard time letting my future 12-year-old daughter read it. Bella is very disrespectful to her parents and her relationship with Edward is pretty twisted. So I totally understand that aspect of it if I were a parent.
I like both! I prefer the books for both but maybe like Harry potter alittle more. I read twilight before the movie was announced and it took me a few chapters to stop rolling my eyes. I enjoyed a laugh at the spelling mistakes and redundant narration but the Cullen's finally drew me in till I forgave the rest. Harry potter on the other hand is excellent writting and really engaging! I find it a tiny bit harder to enjoy the movies after I read the books but still pretty good although rushed.
I tried the hunger games and couldn't get past chapter 1. Too depressing.
I love HP, but never even gave Twilight a fighting chance. I guess it was all the hype and annoyance of working at Barnes & Noble during the Twi-craze that put me off so much. Vampires just don't cut if for me. The Count is more of a vampire than Edward.
Harry Potter.
I have never read the Twilight books or seen the movies. I guess it just didn't spark my interest.
If we are comparing the movies as I haven't read the books for either, It is an insult to even consider comparing Harry Potter with Twilight. lol Don't get me wrong I love vampire stuff but the movies are just aweful. I watched the first two and then shut off the third like ten minutes in, its just so blah. Harry Potter is once in a lifetime!
Now if Jacob had played edward I may have been more inclined to watch breaking dawn, at least Jacob is hot. lol
I love Harry Potter; I like Twlight.
Twlight can not even be compared to Harry Potter. I like Twlight and appreciate it for what it is (IMO, it is fluff) It is a fun and easy read I enjoyed reading the books (all-though IMO they were poorly written and the story is not fully flushed out) and the movies are some-what entertaining. I think Twlight is a fad that will fade eventually.
Harry Potter I will read and watch the movies over and over again for years to come. Each time I read the books I find new things and connections woven into the story. I think it is a great, well written series and will stand the test of time.
I refuse to watch or read either... my friends drive me NUTS with both of these! I even found FI secretly watching Harry Potter the other day haha, I just don't get it!!
ETA: oops just read that you had to have read or seen both.. my bad. I have been forced to sit in the same room while the movies are playing, so I have seen parts of them.. but I still dislike them! I think if I absolutely had to pick one, it'd be Harry Potter just based on how annoyed Twilight makes me haha
Love Harry Potter, loathe Twilight.
I personally feel like the two can't even be compared to each other.
I love them both but i read twilight series much more voraciously than I did harry Potter!
@Nicoley1985: I think you have to watch and/or read harry potter in the right order from start to finish to really appreciate it. If you just watch it in pieces it really doesn't give you the full effect of series. It really isn't even the story that is so great it is basically just the meaning behind the series; The books came out in 1997 when I was in grade 3 (our librarian read it to us) and the last movie just finished this summer, so it basically spanned a huge chunk of our childhood for everyone in and around my age. The HP movies are ones you can watch over and over again, which can't be said for many movies.
That said, if you don't watch them it is not the end of the world. I have some friends that are HP obsessed to the point of Tattoos, dressing up, conventions etc, personally I just think they are great movies and everyone should have a chance to appreciate them.
I love reading, and in my opinion Harry Potter is a much better written book. I just get into the story and feel like I'm in the character's heads and seeing the details much better. And I like the story better, there's that too. The boy craziness of Twilight just bothers me. This does an excellent job of explaining how I feel about it...I have no interest in characters who think being stalked and controlled is romantic, flee into the woods to hide from danger, etc. Someone else posted it on another thread and I had to save it.

And HP fans should check out this link, it's very funny but too long for me to post here: http://danceofthemasks.blogspot.com/2010/12/why-ronhermione-pws-bellaedward-not.html
@Wonderstruck: Haha! That was me! I posted that from pinterest a few days ago. I love it also.
Love HP. Cannot get into Twilight at all but have seen them (bff LOVES them). Also waiting on Hunger games :)
Hmmm.... I can't say I like both equally, because I love HP above and beyond Twilight, but I did enjoy Twilight as a light read. Gotta say I thought The Host was way better though.
I've read both series and I've seen all of the movies (except for Breaking Dawn).
I hated Twilight. I read it to see how the story goes, but in my opinion I think Stephenie Meyer is a terrible writer; and the movies were terribly directed, written, cast, and acted.
I LOVE Harry Potter. The books, the movies, the writing, the directing, the acting, basically everything about it.
@Wonderstruck: LOVE that picture.
That's the main beef I have with Twilight. Waaaaay too melodramatic and I do think it isn't the best example with impressionable young teenage girls (I swear my teenage cousin and her relationship problems stem from being so obsessed with the series).
