I was born and raised Lutheran. However, my dad was born and raised Catholic and converted after he married my mom (in 1969). He took adult catechism classes and really enjoyed the experience. He went to catholic school k-12 and he didn’t like how the system (at that time) did not actively encourage individuals to read the bible and search for their own answers though reading and prayer. He didn’t regret his decision and has been involved in a few different activities with the church over the years. Although he noticed several differences, I know he appreciated the Lutheran church more. He also said that he was highly uncomfortable with confession – so I suppose that made the switch easier (since Martin Luther believed Lutherans should speak directly to God through prayer to ask forgiveness.

However, this switch is a deeply personal decision. I would encourage you to attend Lutheran services at a few different churches, and also see if one of them might let you attend an adult bible study (I know the evangelical lutheran churches would be open to this, but not sure if missouri synod affliated churches would allow you to do that if you aren’t an active member).

I can say I’ve remained in the Lutheran church because I feel their practices for worship and family life coincide well with my own beliefs about how faith should be incorporated into my everyday life. If you have any specific questions, let me know and I will try my best to answer them!
