I think it depends on the cake. I really don't like the first one posted in Miss Sparkler's post, but the other 3 I think are beautiful.
FI's grooms cake will be sans icing. He's not a fan of icing, so for his football grooms cake, we're just going to have chocolate cake, the only icing will be the white piping for the laces. I haven't seen anything like that at a real wedding, but I think it looks kinda neat.
I've made them for birthday parties and showers for people. I agree, it depends on the cake used but in many cases I think they're really cool looking.
For me personally though.... bring on the frosting :)
i would prefer naked over fondant any day - but yeah, bring on the buttercream frosting for me
I love icing, but if you arent a fan, I think you should go for the naked cake!! I think the MS looks really nice. I wonder if the baker who does your cake wraps the circumference of the cake in wax paper, if it would stop the edges from being crispy. Then you (or whoever) can peel it off prior to the quests arriving!
I've never actually seen one in real life but I think they look cool. I do love my frosting though, lol how about having little bowls of cool whip around in case your guest wanted to make it a little sweeter?
I agree with eloping, I would take a naked cake over fondant any day! maybe there is something wrong with my tastebuds, but I think it tastes like play-doh?
I'm sure this won't help you decide, but Hilary Duff had a naked cake

@cramandaberry: I really loved hillary duff's cake.
I am planning a wedding for a couple who is getting married at an Orchard during strawberry season. She is having a naked cake, but is having strawberries and their juice poured over the top before serving. Yummo!
I wish we could do this! I am not a fan of icing at all, but I don't think anyone else would let me get away with this :(
@ceamoste: I've yet to see if anyone will let me get away with this. I think my FMIL would be really upset.
@mwitter80: That is amazing, sounds so good!
@smi5002: If I can get away with it, I'll def see what the bakeries have to say about the cake keeping.
What is the point of cake if not for eating the icing!?!?!?!?!
:)
in all honesty though, my love for icing and sugar aside... I really do hate it. I think even Duff's cake was ugly... so if she, who could spend all kinds of money had her cake come out iffy.... I feel like the average baker would have a cake more like the first on on Ms.Sparklers post... Bakers are used to using icing (and now fondant) to cover imperfections... without it... eh, I wouldn't be so confident in the outcome...
ps, DH HATES icing and we have super different tastes for it, I love the buttercream and he loves the fluffy bland stuff... We spent more time tasting icing than cake but were able to get one we both liked and our guests loved it :)
I like them in theory, but in reality, they just look unfinished to me. I think guests who DON'T frequent wedding blogs would see that cake and be like, "Your cake baker forgot to ice your cake and delivered it like that to you anyway!" They SHOULD look simple and elegant but to me, they just don't.
We are having a naked carrot cake (some icing sugar sprinkled over it though).
Icing is gross and FI and I do not enjoy it in any form! We are doing individual pastries and desserts (cupcakes being an option) so the folks who like icing can indulge!
I love the look of these cakes, but would miss the icing personally!
@bakerella: bahaha! That is the worst ugly cry ever
As a cake decorator I despise naked cakes because the cake wants to be finished so badly! It looks like the baker started and just never finished. Even if the cake were baked that morning, it would still be dry and crusty on the outside... euww crusty

We are talking cakes sans icing here.
As discussed by Miss Sparkler http://www.weddingbee.com/2011/04/13/naked-cake-trend/.
Has anyone done this or been to a wedding which had one? What about the cake being more... um, exposed, did it affect the cake? (ie stale)
I'm loving this version from MS, http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/recipe/old-time-favorites-strawberry-shortcake but my mom thinks its a little to crazy and not practical (she's the one who mentioned the cake wouldn't hold up well)
