I've never done it, but I've read a lot of good things about doing that. It's what I was going to do, before the wedding got moved to too soon and I got worried about shipping times. I've seen at least one bee mention that they did it and it wasn't exactly like it was supposed to be, but she got it straightened out really easily. Good luck! That's an amazing deal!
Which ebay company did you purchase the dress from? I am considering going this route as well. Try as I might, I can't just can't justify spending $5,000 on a dress I will wear for less than a day.
I plan on doing this as well, I created a post "Hiring a Chinese dressmaker" and several of the girls listed their experiences, all positive! Not only have Bees recommended it, but many books that I have read say that ordering your dress direcly from China is a great experience and they are sold/made at killer prices!
This is the list for the dress. I am embarassed to say that i am not sure what the company name is. The payment was done thru paypal. i will let you know how it turns out.
I am going through some MAJOR drama with this right now. I went through Kaersen.com and ordered a copy of a Sophia Tolli wedding gown that I tried on, loved but just could not afford. After ordering in October, I received someone else's wedding dress in December, and the bride who received mine sent it back to China. I have yet to receive my gown, and all communication has stopped (only way to contact is through email.)They sent me pictures that were obviously taken in their shop of a georgeous gown with intricate beading, and looks to be of high quality, and the dress I received that belonged to another bride was beautiful as well...just the communication has been a huge problem! If you have time to deal with hold-ups, it still seems like an ok deal, just be aware, and absolutely order through Paypal and a credit card so you are able to dispute a charge if needed.
I am honestly so disappointed that it didn't work out...back to the bridal shops I go!
I went with bridaldress4u.com (also on ebay) and they were great! Wasn't about to spend 4500 on a ML dress.
I don't remember who I ordered through, but I did that. I think I spent about $140 for a knockoff Maggie Sottero gown. Well, I hope you have better luck than I did. It looked okay from a distance, but it was really cheap lace and the sash was poorly made. I sold it to someone for a "trash the dress" and bought a Pronovias. Definitely worth the money to upgrade.
I considered doing it, but ultimately decided to go through a bridal salon. I've read mixed reviews about doing it - some have gotten amazing dresses, and some have gotten terrible headaches. If getting a good deal is the most important aspect, then I would definitely encourage it. If you're concerned about quality and craftsmanship in addition to quality, I'm not sure I would take that gamble.
But thats just my opinion...
Good luck!!
My girlfriend did this, her luck wasn't so great...spent appx 600 on a dress she was in love with paid for everything up front and two days before her wedding we were hitting every shop in town to find her a dress. Good luck to those who do this and congratulations on finding your perfect dress!
I got burned getting a knock off dress. My advice is to work with a local seamstress or at least check with BBB 1st.
I never even knew there was a such thing! But sounds like it's worth looking into...at the very least, perhaps can use it for photo sessions...Good luck!
ohh i was looking though those chinese dress shop on ebay and wondered the same thing!!! I guess its a gamble ...$150 sounds like something I'd try and if not resell it on ebay? Thank you guys for info!
I did a lot of research and have read a lot of boards/ discussions about this topic. the bottom line that i learned? if you want lace.. dont go the replica route. lace is hard to replicate and still have it look nice. send lots of pics, lots of angles, under the arm sides etc. everything. mroe the marrier. and last get professionally measured at least 2ce and 1ce by a friend. also i have heard only good things about Milly Bridal and the one negative comment i saw was someone that admitted they didnt measure herself correctly. i think im going this route to be honest. my wedding isnt for a while yet and i dont have anyplace to store the dress (only takes like 2 months!) so im holding off for a little bit at least.
I'm going through Milly Bridal and having a knock off Vera Wang made. So far so good! I should have it in August.
I think it also has to to with the TYPE of dress. Lace dresses probably would be tricky, but plainer dresses would probably work.
I am very interested in this as well! I am in LOVE with this dress by Michelle Roth, and i have found a couple places based out of china that will make it for 500 and less. you do have the option of paying with paypal, which is good and legit, but i am so worried that it will not look good because of all the layers of lace. and they wont send me a pic of a dress THEY have made. let us know how this works out for you, my date is in October so it looks like we both have awhile to decide.

Ok so I checked out all the sites listed and the MillieBridal.com seems like the most legit to me, because the actually have pics of the dresses THEY made, and not just the model wearing it in the fashion show. Even with all the mixed reviews it still seems like something I might like to try, if I can find the one I want.
I decided to go with Milly. Just made the payment. I'll let you know how it goes :-P
I'm interested as well. Considering going the same route. Please keep us posted and we'd love to see pics.
I bought a dress form a knock off company and had a very bad experience. My advise would be to make sure you know the return policy and order with plenty of time to allow for plenty of time to get a different dress if it doesn't work out.
So is the consensus that Milly Bridal is the way to go? my dream dress is maggie sottero's SaBelle and I will buy it knock off if it'll be good.
I ordered a knock off Maggie sottero hampton from inweddingdress.com and I love my dress!
OH!Shainajane: inweddingdress.com actually sent me pics of the Sabelle that they made.
here it is

Here is the knock off Maggie sottero hampton that I recieved today!!! I love it!!
OK! so I tried on the REAL Maggie Sottero Hampton dress, and all I can say is…this knock off is not EXACTLY the same…but it’s still a pretty nice dress. I wasn’t expecting an exact replica anyway. The real Maggie has a nice silky feel to it. The knock off uses different fabric…it’s just not as soft. I think the fabric feels a little cheap…but maybe it’s because I’ve felt the real silky fabric? The real Maggie also hides your tummy way better than the knock off. The beading is different than the real Maggie….but it still looks nice. The inside of the dress is soft. There are three layers, the inner which is soft that touches your skin, then the fabric that makes it puffy, then the dress itself!
OVERALL: I love love love this dress and I think this knock off was worth my money! (I paid $300 which includes shipping) The real Maggie is around $1400.
never. i'm all for saving a dime, but there are ways to do it without causing anxiety. discontinued samples from bridal boutiques, ebay, pre-owned websites, even craigslist. if a dress is made with expensive ornamentation, stick with the designer; these makers have the needed resources at their disposal because they make the dress much more frequently. a dressmaker in china does not, and is forced to cut corners. the dress suffers for it, and ultimately, so does the bride. i'm attaching a photo of my dress, which a chinese website offers to copy for $300. the suggestion this dress could be replicated for so little is ludicrous.

I didn't got my dress from a bridal shop because I am a control freak but if I wasn't I would total go for a copy from a seller that us highly recommended so many brides on her have done it with sucess point is just don't go to a person no one has ordered from.

Wow checked ebay and there is an amazing seller! She has the real gowns but as samples. The quality is amazing. I wish I had known.
Ordered from Jeff Lui/April Bridal on Ebay last week, I'll post photos when it arrives!

I love Dressilyme. They did an excellent job of this dress for $110 and then I paid $50 for rush shipping. I think average shipping was only $25-$30

I just purchased my dream dress on e-bay. The catch... it is a beautiful $4000 Jim Hjelm dress that I only paid $200 for. The company is out of China and had hundreds of great reviews on ebay. Has anyone purchased a dress from them?
