I would think it would be crunchy and splotchy.  Why not try dying it with fabric dye.

I wouldn’t do it.  Mind you, I am the most paranoid person you will ever meet and would be terrified that the whole thing would go up in flames.

I also fear the BBQ blowing up as well as my clothes dryer.

Yeah, my poor husband.

I saw one on pinterest the other day and the only negative I saw was that when painted completely the light didn’t shine through the shade, so it looks great but isn’t really functional. So depending on what you’re wanting to use it for would probably be a good determinant for doing it or not.

I have, and I used spray paint. It was a very sturdy shade so the paint when on nicely. I was afraid of it not letting out enough light though, so I used a light color (baby pink).

I also have refinished lampshades with different fabric and wallpaper. Both work well!
