Im a city girl so Ive actually never heard of it or tasted it before, but I found it really interesting... has anyone tried it before?

disclaimer- I do not condone any illegal activities... Im just curious =)

My great-grandpa was actually used to make moonshine and he used to have my grandpa drive for him when he was really little. I've never tried the stuff, but I imagine it's not good...haha.

I watched part of the show yesterday as well. I've had it before, a friend would come back from WV with some. Its potent, and could send you reeling from one taste. We actually used to soak fruit in ours, and then eat the fruit. You could barely taste it in the fruit, and damn would it get you drunk in a hurry!

I've had it before.  The first time I had it it tasted like gasoline.  It was horrible. I had it another time after that and it wasn't so bad.

I had some a few years ago at my best friend's wedding rehearsal dinner, which was quite appropriately held in the ravine beside her father's home in the South Carolina sticks :D It was tasty! I didn't have much since I was (*cough*) underage at the time and paranoid.

I was recently in Gatlinburg, TN, where they have an actual legal moonshine distributor. They were offering free moonshine samples, but my husband and I were too chicken to try it.

The fruit soak sounds good. We've had moonshine before, and I swear, I felt like I'd just had a swig of rubbing alcohol or gasoline. Not my thing, wowie!

Yep, I've had it before, but only in tiny doses.  Not my thing at all.  It's fairly common out in the country parts around here.  Whenever we go to his family cookouts out in the boonies, my fiance and his cousins can be found out back swigging on some homemade moonshine.  Yuck.

Yep - I tasted it once and wasn't a fan.  I went to college in GA and one of DH's fraternity brothers had some moonshine (he didn't make it - I think an extended family member did).  Man it is potent!

Just to clarify - Moonshine can be really dangerous if made improperly due to high levels of methanol or lead. Please dont drink it!

A friend of my fathers actually makes apple flavored shine which is so much better than the regular. Moonshining is actually how Nascar & car racing started!

@ella86: Everclear is a weaker\legal version of Moonshine. Its a pure grain alcohol but can be really high proof. everclear is usually 90% while moonshine is like 97-99%

I've tried it - it's okay.  It really depends how it's made and if it's flavored it at all.

The number one rule is that you don't smell if before you drink it or you'll never get it down.

The TLC show is set in Virignia, but it's way south of me, closer to NC and TN.

Back in 2003 or so, I went to Bonnaroo (held in TN) for the first time and a this very young girl came up to me at one of the shows and held up a huge mason jar.  I couldn't hear her at first, but she finally yelled "Moonshine!  Do you want some moonshine?"  I must have made the funniest face because she moved right along.

I think she was charing people for sips from the jar.  Ugh.

I have no interest in in trying it.

I thought the show was really interesting, but I wasnt sure if it was hyped up or "scripted"...

Do most people go to the forrest to do it? Also it seemed like the police on the show were really harsh, but it seems like its common?

Also i missed the first part of the show- is it in the southern parts of the US where it is common?

@Ms.VW: how is it related to NASCAR?

@mikaella.bride: The relation with NASCAR dates back to prohibition where they were moonshine runners and they stocked their cars to be fast as possible. Later down the road it became an organized sport.

mmm moonshine! i've had it a couple times and they all turned out to be pretty crazy nights haha! i personally like moonshine with peaches in it - eating the fruit is the best part!

I recently saw moonshine for sale in the liquor store and i thought to myself "i thought thats was illegal" haha. i think its just illegal because of the high alochol content and selling it without licenses and not paying taxes on profits - but im nots sure... this stuff must have been at an acceptable alcohol proof to be sold in stores and made by a reputible beverage company.

I have friends that make it - but dont sell it..,

Def a southern/mountain thing - applachian area is known for it

I couldn't stomach to drink it plain.  FFIL brought some home, put some in a spoon and put a lighter to it and it caught on fire!  Lol, it was just a little blue flame, but I was too skerred to put it in my mouth.  Then, he brought some home and me, him, and FMIL made Apple Pie Moonshine with it for Christmas gifts.  I drank some of that and it is AWESOME!  It tastes like apple pie.  You can barely taste the liquor, which is dangerous, because one shot glass full will knock your butt out!

I love that show.  I went to school at WVU so yeah we tried it.  My roomate would bring it from her grampa's house!

Also my brother was stationed in NC when he was in the army and he got arrested for "Runnin Shine" across state lines.  He's a cop now and they used to rag on him all the time about it lol

I have had it many times.  The taste and proof depends on who is making it and with what.  Some were really good, more like a flavored everclear and some were super strip the wood if you breath bad.  There is a local maker near our cabin that we try to get a bottle or two of his stuff whenever we go down there.

DH recently went to a football party where he had Vietnamese moonshine.  At the bottom of the bottle was a snake with a scorpion in its mouth.  I have never seen DH and his best friend more drunk ever, and they both just reeked.  It was coming out of their pores it stank so bad.  I actually had to tell my husband not to breath on the wood an had to peel him off of me and beg him not to cuddle with me or breath on me.

I've never tasted American moonshine - though I met some people in WV who make it - but I spent some time in Costa Rica and my host family's neighbors made it in their backyard. I could barely choke down a sip - it burned like crazy.  My host father thought it was hilarious...he had no trouble drinking it!

@mikaella.bride: Virginia's ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) is kind of hardcore.  The sale of alcohol is state controlled here, so my perception is that people supplying it outside the regulated channels are seen (by the ABC) as robbing the Commonwealth of revenue.

I'm not well versed in this...that's just what I think is going on.  Mr. Mink is in the craft brew industry, so I hear about ABC rules now and then.

Wow! I never even heard of this until I chanced upon this thread. We do have a couple of 'country' alcohols as well and they are PRETTY DAMN STRONG, but they taste very good. It's too bad they are noted 'country liqour' and no one else really gets to try them... Frown

I've had it in highschool before, but I grew up in a tiny town where people make moonshine all the time.  Literally you don't need a lot of it to get drunk. I don't usually black out when I drink, even if I drink a lot of hard liquor.... but if I have 2 shots of moonshine I'm done.

It's actually really really really dangerous. My friend had moonshine she added to her drinks with a medicine dropper, it was that strong.

Heck yeah! It's VERY common where I live in Kentucky. My great grandfather and grandfather made moonshine down in the hollers of eastern Kentucky (next to WV). There are all types of moonshine. A traditional moonshine does take like crap. If you've ever had a shot of vodka and gagged because of the strong rubbing alcohol taste, that's preeeetty much what moonshine tastes like. However, my DH and I are good friends with someone who travels to WV and SC to get his. We buy some off of him from time to time. His friend makes Apple Pie moonshine. It's amazing! It tastes just like apple cider. You have to be extremely responsible with it though. The taste isn't nearly as harsh as 'plain' moonshine (if you will) and will get you hammered FAST!

Had some for my 19th birthday from a friend at college who made it-- it wasn't that bad! I mean it was strong in that it was moonshine, but they had some sort of wood in it to give it some slight flavor and, to a 19 year-old, wasn't too much different than taking a shot of any cheap liquor.

That said, I ended the night caught by a cop with a road sign shoved up my shirt (wasn't foolding anyone) and carrying a brick (for no reason, I just felt like bringing it along for the journey). He was very nice and let us go back to our dorms as long as we set all of our souvenirs on the side of the road.  Sealed

Also they do sell "moonshine" in our ABC stores down in North Carolina. (I was raised in VA, had my taste of it there, then moved here for graduate school.) There's fruit in the bottom and I'm sure it'll do the trick, but it's not the full 97-99%.
