I think the to go boxes are a great idea. I think it's really hard to know how many to order. Are the cupcakes just going to be available for guests to pick up themselves, or is someone serving them? Are you having just one flavor or options? Are you having a sweets table, in addition? If I was having cupcakes the amount I order would depend on the answers to those questions.
On the one hand, there will probably be people who don't want (or won't get around to the cupcakes). On the other hand, they are small, portable, tasty little fellows. (That makes it easy for others to grab more than one -particularly if they are helping themselves or if you have more than one flavor, IMO.)
Since my worst nightmare would be to fall short... I would order at least enough for everyone. If you aren't having a sweets table, maybe more. If you do have left overs, I would think so many guests would be perfectly happy to help you take care of that problem.
I am doing red velvet cupcakes and we have 140 guests (I'm including bride and groom), we ordered 210 cupcakes, so that at least everyone can have one cupcake and that leaves 70 left for those who will want another.
Yes it is def a good idea to have the take home boxes so your guests can take thme home. 21o cupcakes seems like alot for 140 guests but maybe its just me. Hopefully someone will be able to give you some advice as to how many you need.
I would have loved to do cupcakes but FH insited on a cake. They look so nice. The box idea is great for carry out.
Im pretty sure the cupcakes will not be served and just be out for people to take. We are having two favors (chocolate and red velvet). I am not doing a candy buffet although I love the idea!
I think I may just go with ordering some extras (maybe like 40 extra or so) just incase - I would hate to fall short. I think the "to-go" boxes may be a good idea so if there is left overs people can take some home.
Thanks!!!! :)
Anyone who's had cupcakes for their wedding..... how did it turn out?.... did people eat more then one?
One for each guest and people WILL take some home! After all, they have kids, and uh, who doesn't like cake? I can't imagine people will eat more than one...especially if there's dinner AND drinks.
I'm having someone wrap up our cake for us. Yum!
PS i only came to this post b/c i saw "cupcakes" and it's officially 330 and i want one! YUM
How many to go boxes will you get? We're doing cupcakes too, and we've decided for 100 people we're getting 100 regular sized and 200 mini cupcakes in several different flavors. People will be able to help themselves, and it's the only dessert we're doing.
I think the boxes are a great idea to take care of any left overs, but I think it would be a shame to spend $ on the boxes if we've accurately estimated the right number of cupcakes and there's none left.
How about little donut baggies? those are real cheap and it's not like the frosting will be all soft and smeary by the end of the reception.
We're doing a small cutting cake and then about 180 cupcakes for 150 guests. People can take them if they want them... but knowing how good they'll be, I anticipate them all being eaten!
@ejs4y8 - great idea, super cheap baggies will do the trick!
oh boy. I didn't even think about if people take more than one... I ordered 55 and am having 47 guests... I did upgrade to jumbo cupcakes though so hopefully it should be more than enough for them! The wedding is in 10 days though so I'll let you guys know how it went :p
We ordered 120 for 90-100 guests. We are also going to have a mini cake to cut like doctor girl. I think they are so rich that people won't be able to eat too many. We are having 3 flavors, strawberry, lemon, and banana. I am a chocolate person, but they were amazing.
We ordered 50 cupcakes and 2 small cakes (shaped like giant cupcakes!) for our wedding of 37 people. When we got a surprise influx of people at the last minute, FI suggested we increase our cupcake order because people will want 2-3 cupcakes and a piece of cake. I think he's ridiculous and we'll have enough.
I love the idea of providing boxes! You'll also want to make sure someone is encouraging guests to take the leftovers so they don't feel greedy taking them home.
I hope, hope, hope, you all come back and let us know how it goes with your numbers and your take away bags! I am doing cupcakes, but not until January, so I'll learn from all of you!
mary alice - I love the idea of a cutting cake being a BIG cupcake!!
We are doing cupcakes at our wedding. I am baking them (I've done several trials to see just how far in advance I can make them) and will be making 2.5 cupcakes per person. We're doing two kinds of cake bases, but 6 different frostings so I fully expect that many people will take two during dinner. I attended a wedding two years ago where there was one cupcake per person, but before the waiters reached our table other guests were having seconds and our table had none!
I ordered single take-away boxes so that after all the cupcakes are served our waiters will box up the remaining cupcakes and our guests can take one as they leave for the night. These are the boxes, and I also bought the cute inserts so the cupcakes won't shift in transit:

We'll stick a recipe on the back of the box and a monogram sticker on the front and it will be one of our two favors.
We are having cupcakes in addition to a candy buffet and small wedding cake. We will have about 120 guests and will probably only order about 75 cupcakes because of the other sweets we are offering.
Runningbee...I saw that you said you were baking the cupcakes yourself...I love the idea of cupcakes, and I want to bake them, but I a not sure if I am going to be in over my head. I just have a couple of questions for you...if you don't mind!! How many guests are you having at your weddding?? How many days before the wedding are you making them and icing them?? How far will you be driving them??
we are doing cupcakes we are doing 1 per person then a few extras we are having dessert bar also with chinese takeout boxes . thats messed up they wont let u keep the extras
Absolutely order more than 1 per person. I would order at least 1.5 times the number of people you have attending if not 2 per person. The to-go boxes are a cute idea but would you do that on top of favors.
here is the answer: 1.5 per person, so if you are having 50 guests order 75 cupcakes, that is the minimum, and goes up to 3 per person, if that is the only desert you are serving and you are having 2 or more flavors order 2 per person.
l hope that hleps.
Kupzcakes
I'm having cupcakes from a cupcake bakery in my city. Expecting 65 guests, ordered 84 cupcakes. (They sell them by the dozen)
We are having petit fours instead of cake. I let the bakery recommend how many to order. I figure they should know, and if anything, they'll want to sell us too much rather than not enough.

I am having cupcakes for my wedding instead of a wedding cake. Its going to be displayed on a cupcake tower, as Im sure you have seen before.
My question is..... How many cupcakes should I order? Should I order one for each guest that is coming? Or do I order extra just incase a few people take two or want more?
The venue told me that any cake/cupcakes that is left after the reception will be thrown away. They can't be liable to store any left overs for us. So, If I have extra's I would need to find someone willing to wrap them up and take them home or something.
I was also toying with the idea of having some "to-go" boxes on hand for people to use at the end of the night if we do have extra cupcakes left. (I would hate for any to go to waste)
Any thoughts or suggestions???
