We just picked up my custom designed engagement ring and something about it looks off to me and I’m not sure what it is. It’s an elongated cushion in an oval halo. I designed it to look similar to a ring that I saw at another jeweler and it didn’t turn out quite the same.

I stupidly told the new jeweler that I wanted the halo and band to be thinner and daintier than the other ring and they ended up making it too thin and dainty to the point where it looks out of proportion to the center stone.  I’m wondering if the small size of the diamonds in the halo could be what’s throwing off the look.  The center stone is set at a medium low setting (as opposed to low low). I think I may want to lower the center stone to see if that improves how the diamonds look in the halo. I’d love to see some pics from anyone who has decided to do this with a halo ring. The center stone criteria is all very good / excellent except for the symmetry which is only good, could that be what’s causing it to look odd to me?  Any other suggestions? I’m so afraid to alter it at all because I don’t necessarily dislike the ring.  But I always envisioned that I would adore my engagement ring and instead I just feel disappointed. I’d also be devastated if I messed with it and it came out looking worse.

I’m attaching a crappy pic I took with an iphone.  Thanks for any advice you can provide.

I did,,, you used to be able to see the point of the diamond and I couldn't stand that!  I could literally have seen the bottom of the setting... so I got it lowered...

I think your current ring is beautiful! But I understand being a little disappointed if it's not what you wanted. Do you have a picture of the inspiration ring?

@mseagles:  I absolutely love your ring, I was originally looking for something like this. My engagement ring didn't come out exaaactly as I was hoping, but I would definitely suggest sitting with it for a while. Maybe don't change anything immediatly.

I think the proportions of your ring are great, I think often times the halo looks like it's competing with the centerstone, so yours is one of the better ones I've seen.

My halo is a little weird, so it's not a great comparison, but I had it set in a bezel setting which is very low. I'm wondering if just adding a bezel instead of prong set would give it that umph you're looking for, without adding too much to the halo...

@red_rose:  I brought mine back to where my husband bought it, and they lowered it for free.

@Heartly:  I LOVE your ring.  This is probably the first bezel setting I've been in love with! It's so unique!

I love your ring. I don't know if lowering the center stone would solve the issue, but I would go back and have them remake it instead. They should be able to show you exactly what it will look, in actual size, on the computer before the officially start making it. I actually favor high settings and am trying to find a high cathedral setting with a halo on a thick vintage band. It's near impossible to find, by the way, lol. Could you maybe post a side view of your ring?

Mines a little higher than I want too. How exactly do they lower it?

@mseagles:  Your ring is beautiful, I don't think it is too dainty, I think it looks gorgeous on your finger :) But do whatever will make you happy to wear it for the next billion years ;)

@Janaic88:  Thanks! And I'm with you, never thought I would end up with bezel based on what I saw out there. But when I tried one on, the comfort and ease of it totally won me over. And they can be dainty!

I thought that no one had responded to this post, but I just realized that I forgot to hit the button for requesting notifications! Anyway, since I posted this FFI has now become my fiance :)

@Rubbs:  Did you notice a major differnce after it was lowered? Are you happy with that change?

@Dialysate:  Thank you! I'm attaching the inspiration ring. Also, I just showed my ring to my FMIL last night and she thinks it doesn't need to be lowered so I'm second guessing.

@Heartly:  Thank you! I love your bezel setting. I originally asked for one, but had to nix it in the final design stage due to the added cost. I like the idea of keeping it as it for a while. The jeweler's policy is to make changes free of charge within 10 days of purchase so I will have to pay to get it lowered if I wait. I think it may be worth it though.

@red_rose:  Lowering mine would be free if I do it within 10 days. I'm going to find out the cost to lower it if I waited and will let you know. Why do you want yours lowered? Does it get snagged on things or do you just prefer that look?

@aramisg90:  Sorry, I tried three times and I'm having some issues getting that side view to post. Unfortunately, the jeweler will only do minor revisions without charging us to recreate the whole ring.

@bluebelle23:  It is my understanding that they shorten the length of the prongs. They remove the center stone, weld down the prongs to a shorter size then reset the stone and prongs back around the stone. This is an easy process that can be done in one day.The downside is that if you don't like it lowered the jeweler said that raising it back may not look right.

    @ParisM:  @Bebealways:  @Ohregina:   Thanks girls!

Here is the inspiration ring that Dialysate asked about:

@mseagles:  Oh yeah. I noticed the difference and so did my husband, but no one else did. I couldn't be more happy with it.

Oh and if you lower it and don't like it, you can always raise it again...that's what our place said.

I bought a ring that had the center stone set right in the setting so it doesn't stick out. The whole center basket has some height but I have no ring sticking out and catching on things, which I love. My shank was too thin and tapered, which I didn't like, so I had it changed out to something more substantial, yet still delicate. I also changed from white gold to platinum at that point, why not?!

Website shot with thin tapered shank. Didn't look good on my hand perhaps because I'm a size 4.75 and very little shank showed on my fingers:

    My changes on the shank:

    Low center stone:

Your band is delicate and thin, yes, but perhaps with a larger wedding band, it might look spectacular. I love when the wedding band is wider ;) A smaller shank makes the center stone appear larger!

Here's my initial e-ring, which had a skinny band. I thought that's what I wanted at first but it turns out I wanted a wider shank. I changed rings because the quartz was getting scratched.

@mseagles:  I want mine lowered b/c I partly just like the look better, but it doesn't necessarily get snagged on things; more it just bumps and scraps things. I know that would only be moderately fixed if I got it lowered.
