there is bravobride.com no fee charge! But I read an article about selling used wedding dresses. And in the article said that preownweddingdress.com is the best to sell a used wedding gown.
Well I have looked at preowned a ton, I have not purchased anything. But I am still looking! I have read many a post here on WB of women who've gotten their dresses off POWD.com, so they do sell on there! I'd say to list it here, craigslist, bravobride, and ebay. I noticed the other day ebay lets you do 3-4 free postings a month now and you can do it as a set price, you don't need to put it up as an auction! The cost of POWD.com might be worth it if those others don't garner any interest.
eBay charges exhorbitant final value fees. I used to sell on eBay, and IMHO it is not worth it.
I sold my 1st dress (not the one!!) on Kijiji - there are free ads, it is similar to craigslist. But I had it listed on preownedweddingdresses.com as well for about a month with no hits...it was in the "OTHER" category though, so not too many people look there I think!!
If you have a brand name / designer gown over $500, it's probably worth posting on preownedweddingdresses.com for $25! Good luck!
oh! i forgot to add i did buy "the one" off POWD.com, so yup, those dresses sell! My colleague also has got a lot of hits on her dress - but she has it listed something like 75% off retail.
I'm trying to help my mom sell her dress, and I've used the Classifieds here and OnceWed. I haven't received any communications from WB, and only scammers from OW. If you find a better way, I can't wait to hear it. ;)
hmm. Thanks. I'll try to avoid Ebay for now (I did see they took a lot of money off- like 12%!) and stick with the free stuff. If I don't get something within the week or so, I'll try preowned wedding dresses. It's a Maggie Sottero (well, Sottero and Midgley- can I list that under Maggie Sottero?) so hopefully it gets some hits. The $25 fee is less than what it would cost to post on Ebay anyway (if it sold).
@Spaniel- I posted awhile ago on WB and got a few replies, but it just wasn't what they were looking for in the end. I'm anticipating mostly spammers from CL as well though. We'll see! Good luck selling hers :)
I haven't sold mine but I bought it used. I looked on preowned a lot but ended up buying it through bravobride.com. I'd definitely suggest putting it on there. It really seemed like it grew a lot just during the time I was looking.
I haven't sold one, but I did buy a dress from preownedweddingdresses.com! I think the dress was listed for quite a while before I bought it but I had zero issues with my transaction. I highly recommend using escrow.com (which is what they recommend) for the actual transaction. It allows you both to create a contract, then the buyer submits their money to the escrow company, then the seller ships merch and once buyer says their merchandise looks good (or the agreed upon time period elapses and you don't hear anything back- I think ours was 7 days?) the money is released to the seller. Easy, plus you get to make your own terms!
I just posted on Oncewed today, so hopefully it will be up soon. I'll try Bravobride as well. I looked into escrow and it will also charge me $25 for the transaction. No fun!
There are some physical stores that will buy your dress from you and sell it as well-of course, I'm sure they profit off of it, and I don't know what ind of deal you might get, but I think that may be the route I end up going to not have to worry about it :)
@June Bug that sounds like it was be so nice and easy! How would I find one of those?
I've heard some great success stories of preownedweddingdresses.com. Also, ebay.
Check with local boutiques as well to see what deal you could get there!
What dress do you have, by the way?
Mine is a Sottero and Midgley VSM7047. It's an older style (I'm not sure exactly which collection) but hasn't been discontinued yet. Going to try selling for $400-$500 (New is $800), but we'll see. Im really hoping I can sell it on craigslist because I don't want to try to ship it, though I know it can be done.
Oh, and one other thought for you, JoesWifey: While it can seem easier to take your dress to a local consignment shop, you'll have to split the sale with the store (they usually take about 50%), and your dress will only be seen by local shoppers who visit that particular store. Your chances of selling online are much greater, and you get to keep 100% of the profit. Shipping your dress sounds like a big hassle, but it's really not that bad. UPS or FedEx will pack it for you, and you can negotiate with the buyer to have them pay for packing and shipping if you don't want to foot the bill.
I tried to sell my dress twice on craigslist and on local resale sites. No hits at all. I watched my same dress on Ebay just different size. It never sold. It is the Maggie Celeste. I never wore the dress or had it altered and I thought for sure it would sell... it didn't. I think my problem was the dress color was is a blush pink. Not too many girls want a dress in a color other then white/ivory. So I'm now wearing it for this wedding. I still love the dress and can't believe it still fits! LOL
I've also tried to sell my friend's dress. I've listed it on here, Preowned and she's listed it on craigslist and a few other sites. I think her problem is she is trying to sell it for the price she paid for it which is $4500. Not too many people in the market for that price range especially when they can go to the store still and buy it new and get service from the store.
Good luck not like you have anything to lose!
I agree with all of the helpful points from Tracy of Recycled Bride. One of my daughters sold her gown in three months by listing it very quickly after the wedding and pricing it right. My other daughter has an Amsale gown, but she wasn't sure she wanted to sell it and waited several more months longer. Then she priced it too high, feeling she couldn't part with it for less. Now she has reduced the price, but after three years it is doubtful it will sell. I have a preowned dress website, too, by the way, and I do have a small listing fee in order to promote the dresses.
Yes, I sold my dress and veil last week on Craigslist. I had them posted for a month and no bites. Then I posted with a professional photo from David Bridals website instead of my own photos. Craigslist degrades the quality of the photo when you upload them so the professional photos looked better.
Also, I listed my phone number so I didn't get any scammers e-mailing me. The woman who bought it actually needed a size larger, but she loved the dress so she was going to alter it. I sold it for $30.00 more than I paid. Keep in mind I bought my dress from David Bridals off their $99.00 rack. I got a dress that they still sell but not in the smaller sizes anymore. Hence, my dress was discounted. It is regularly sold for $619.00.
I think the photos you use and listing your dress soon after the wedding help to sell it faster.
What are some reasons for selling it? I don't know if I could ever sell my wedding dress..
I have no children to pass it on to and it would just take room up in my closet. I'll never wear it again and I have beautiful pictures from the wedding. Why not have another bride enjoy the dress?
I'm planning on selling mine. I'll probably bite the bullet and pay the listing fee at preownedweddingdresses.com. I was thinking of listing it at 50% of its original list price. Does that sound reasonable? I would rather that it sells fairly quickly than I make a ton of money off the sale.
I think listing your dress at 50% of its original list is very reasonable. You could always lower the price if you need to in the future. Sometimes local consignment shops are a good option. I found a wedding consignment shop that charges a fee of 35% the first month, 45% the second month and 50% the third month depending upon how long it takes to sell your dress. They also advertise and sell in other states. I planned to use them if my dress did not sell.
You might want to check out this Wall Street Journal article on the relative merits of various dress resale sites. I sold mine through Preowned Wedding Dresses. However, my wife's has been listed there (and many other places) for months without a nibble, even though it is listed at less than half of its original price. I think that hers was actually nicer than mine, but it's a Da Vinci bridal and we don't know the style number, so fewer people are able to find it in a search.

did u sell ur dress? what kind ? i'm looking for one in particular!
@therbst: Was your question addressed to me, or to the OP, or to someone else? I sold mine, but I did not sell NotFroofy's (the one shown above) yet. The one we have left is an ivory Emme Bridal (Da Vinci), but we do not know the style number.

I would really like to sell my wedding dress, but I'm not too sure how to go about it. I've posted on Weddingbee clasifieds and haven't got much of a response, I'll try Craigslist, but I don't really want to go the Ebay route if possible. Has anyone tried preownedweddingdress.com? I know lots of women look there, but I'm not sure how many actually buy, or if anyone has any experience selling there. I don't really want to pay the $25 listing fee since I don't really know if it will sell :/ I could really use the extra cash it would bring in!
