I think you could word it like “Kentucky Derby/Garden Style/ Hats Encouraged” Something along those lines?? You could spread the word through all your friends the types of hats you are thinking and I’m sure they’ll encourage their guys to get in on it. I doubt anyone would think to wear a hat to a wedding reception, anyway! At least, I hope not…

I second the Kentucky Derby theme. My mom went to a bridal shower with that theme and most showed up with hats. You may also want to consider getting a few extra hats to have laying around the reception in case some people don’t understand.

* I definitely meant they wouldn’t think to wear a BASEBALL Cap. I would love to attend an outdoor wedding with fun hats!!

I’m doing this through word of mouth instead of on the invite. Just tell the women, “Royal wedding/Kentucky derby” and they’ll get the idea and will guide their men accordingly.

@lynnchee:  What time did you get married?  We’re thinking of doing the same kind of “tea wedding” but I wondered what time ya’ll got married.  Thanks!

How about simply including the word “elegant” in there somewhere? “Elegant bonnets, fascinators, derby hats, pork pie hats, newsboy caps, hombergs, and fedoras are strongly encouraged.”
