Or am I the only crazy one? My SO and I KNOW we're going to get married. He's been unemployed for the past year, so our plans got put on hold. He recently found a job [yay!], and since then, we've been talking more about the wedding- he even said he hopes to propose within a couple months!! AND, we have a tentative date for fall 2013 [depends on the venue, you know?].

That being said, I've started buying little things here and there. Like, favor boxes, my garter, my clutch, my dress...you know, little things, haha. I figured our engagement is going to be over a year, so the sooner I start buying small things, the better. That way it won't feel like I'm spending as much since I'll be spending $20 here, $30 there versus dropping $200 all at once [I'm always super broke because my daughter is a money vacuum]. I'm definitely a DIY bride, and I'll be doing everything from invites, to centerpieces, to bouquets, to...everything. Seemed practical to start now! Anyone else? Or am I nuts?

I remember when I was waiting I went to hobby lobby for hours at a time just... looking.  I did actually buy a few real touch roses when they were on sale, and I bought a lot of pearls and wire and started making pearl strands to put in my bouquet of real touch flowers.  Now I am not using the real touch but will use the pearls still lol. I think it was perfectly fine to do that, and my SO (now FI) knew we would be getting engaged as soon as we could afford it.

I'm going to go with you are not crazy :) I have no timeline and no potential wedding month and I bought a dress a few months ago.  It was on ebay in the size I wanted so why not?  If something goes wrong and we break up or I don't like it anymore it is a popular dress and I will resell it.  If it works better for you to buy a little at a time go for it.  As long as you aren't someone that changes their mind a lot then you might be in trouble before 2013 rolls around!  Good luck

@HopefulInLove:  I think I'll be ok. The only things I'm uncertain about are the centerpieces, but that depends on the venue. Things like my garter, clutch, and bridesmaids gifts are set. I'm glad I'm not the only one who got my dress before I ws even engaged :)

@TriciaAndDazzling:  haha I'm having this internal debate myself, I know it's coming soon, and I would love to buy as much as I can now so that I can save myself in the long run, but I don't want to jinx myself lol. But I'm pretty sure I am going to make my first OFFICIAL wedding purchase next week... Wedding Forever Stamps from the Post Office lol I found some pretty ones and since they're Forever stamps it won't matter if the postage goes up before it's official :-)

Yep that's what I plan on doing! I've already started my budget spreadsheet and I have a list of 'iin the wedding budget' items, and paycheck items. The paycheck items are little things, like lanterns for centrepieces, stamps, bathroom essentials etc. That way I'll be happy I have them, and when I need a little spending fix at least I know it's going towards something, instead of wasting money on something that isn't necessary!

I don't think I could buy my dress, though... I want to go dress shopping with my mum!

I am doing the same thing... my reasoning is that if I buy it now, it's like it's "free" later!  Haha, yeah right!  But still...

I bought my dress (!!), ceremony shoes, and parts of my centerpieces already.  I've talked to SO about it already and he's fine with it, although he probably thinks I'm a little crazy but he's generally supportive of my ideas like for centerpieces and stuff.  My only advice out of all this is not to get too crazy with "themed" stuff... for instance, I had a great idea for paper flowers made out of pages that meant a lot to me, only to realize 1) SO is a big supporter of REAL flowers and his former florist grandma probably is too and 2) I made about 200 before realizing the colors of the pages I'd used didn't go together at ALL and especially not with what we think our colors will be!!

@annasaf83:  That's a good idea. I wish there was a stamp shower to go with all the other showers [engagement, bridal, etc...]. You just don' realize how many stamps you really need until you start planning. STDs, Invites, RSVPs, thank yous. It's crazy!

@treacle:  I didn't plan on getting mine when we went. I just wanted to look, but when I found it, we just had to. I knew it was the one, and I couldn't pass it up.

@elysion:  Oh no! Maybe you can use them for shower decorations? Or create a fake bouquet for the rehearsal? I would have been frustrated at that.

Luckily, my SO is supportive too. He knows I'm just planning everything now because I love him so much, and I'm excited to marry him. I DO feel a bit crazy though, haha.

Yes.... My boyfriend and I am pretty serious and he has a ring so after we went shopping my Mom and I started buying little things together like centrepieces for the shower, candles, flowers and branches for the wedding centre pieces, and little things for the shower games. We got everything on sale. Now I just need the ring!

I've been saving all of my completely used candle jars and Prego jars and wine bottles to use as centerpieces of some sort.  lol

@weightwatchers152:  Great! We got a few favor boxes on sale, so we've gotten those too. It's too hard to pass up a good deal.

@Megan316:  We're using cans [small vegetable cans, regular size, and family soup size] wrapped in yarn, hen spray painted for ours. I haven't started saving those yet, but I'll have a big box full as soon as I do. I bet your centerpieces will look awesome.

Oh yes!  We're getting married this December, and I am Oh so patiently awaiting that bling.  I bought my dress over a month ago, and have bought a couple of other little things.  I'm trying to wait until I get the ring to put $$ down on our venue, but I'm getting nervous!  I've also bought a couple of Groupons for VistaPrint for invitations/save the dates etc that I don't have to order yet.  And I bought a Groupon for Engagement pictures!  Bring on the bling!

    @TriciaAndDazzling:

OP, I think you are smart to get started sooner than later. It will reduce your stress later on and allow you to stick to a budget, because you'll have time to look for the best deals. Happy shopping and planning, and good luck!
