@Courtneyashley:  Yeah I probably wouldn’t take it as a compliment.  But.. just smile and say “thanks, we’re so happy!” and walk away.

….Unless somone blatantly insults me, I won’t judge every little comment they make if they’re not mean spirited.

I don’t expect everyone to drool over my ring.

@Courtneyashley:  “cute” doesn’t seem an appropriate descriptor.  I would use cute to describe a promise ring.  Or a friendship bracelet.

@urchin:  +1

I think it depends on who says it 🙂 I love my ring but I know it isn’t the greatest ring and the responses I get are usually its pretty or cute. I don’t mind either one becuase it is PERFECT to me 🙂

I think it depends on the person and the tone they’re using. There’s a difference between someone who just hasn’t quite found the right word but clearly likes your ring vs. the bitchy people who say it condescendingly.

@Courtneyashley:  no one has ever called my ring that, but no, i would not take it as a compliment. I would feel patronized. I would just brush it off and not make a big deal out of it though.

Girl, I’ve gotten that twice, it is so rude! Cute is for puppies and babies and other LITTLE THINGS, lol.

I can’t judge people though–when I saw my cousin’s engagement ring for the first time, I was just like, “Oh… that’s nice…” haha it was just SOOO not my style that it took me a second to recover, and now I’ve felt terrible about it ever since!

CUTE implies small- anyone who claims otherwise is simply lying. Meh, my ring is “small” its also cute.

I also would find this annoying, but in the end, I’d blame it on a stunted vocabulary. Laughing

@Courtneyashley:  While in Harrod’s (Department store London) I was shown a relatively pricey item by a sales clerk and responded by saying “it’s cute.” I meant absolutely nothing by it and it was just a phrase I used in response to the item. She immediately said..”oh you much be from the US” and went on to tell me how Americans over use that phrase more than anyone else.

While I don’t know if she is right I do know I use it a lot and often without thinking it just comes out. It has no derogatory tone or intention, it is just a phrase used to respond to something we are shown. So in other words unless you know for a fact that the person saying it is intending to put you down I wouldn’t worry about it and just let it go.

I’ve heard that too, and from friends who are the most loving and wonderful people – so I know it wasn’t meant as an insult.  I’m sure they’re trying to compliment you but doing it poorly, so just appreciate the thought 🙂
