Did you try the Georgia Aquarium? SO and I stayed in Atlanta with friends who lived in a nice neighborhood (1 mil plus houses) and we loved it! I am not a fan of big cities in general though, so if you’re staying in the actual city and not suburbs I understand how you feel.

I think there are nice people and great things to do in every city. After all, do you really think all those people would stay living in a boring, aesthetically displeasing city

When we travel I always talk to local people and ask them for suggestions on what to do outside the usual tourist traps. I have had some great adventures going to a state prison to see the artwork done by the inmates, helped out at a local fundraiser for a burned out family, dined at a restaurant run by recovering addicts etc

Hopefully you enjoy the rest of your trip.

Atlanta is a great city with lots of fun things to do in beautiful neighborhoods. None of those things you mentioned represent the best Atlanta has to offer. Perhaps his family can suggest some things to do such as go to Piedmont Park or the lovely restaurants in Virginia Highlands or the world famous DeKalb Farmers market.

I would say part of a trip, I didn’t care for. We went to Yellowstone (which that was awesome) On the way back to Minnesota we hit South Dakota for Mt. Rushmore. Talk about let down. I honestly wouldn’t go back there unless forced to.  I just didn’t care for it.

ChicoryCreek:  i can’t believe nobody mentioned those! Also check out downtown Decatur and Stone Mountain if you have time. Yeah downtown Atlanta really isn’t great but it’s a huge city. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the rest of your trip and see its appeal.

I was disappointed when I went to DR and (especially!) Barbados. I do like Atlanta though. funny thing is I dislike Philly. I also dislike Detroit and Cincinnati. But I don’t think I’ve seen all that any of those cities have to offer so I wouldn’t go as far as saying all those negative things about any city where people live and obviously love it for a reason.

ChicoryCreek:  Atlanta is actually a pretty cool city if you know where to go. Downtown sucks, and most of the touristy things suck too. What are you in to? Maybe I can recommend some other areas for you to check out.

My husband and I were actually really disappointed with Ireland.  We heard so many good things, and just didn’t think it was very impressive or fun.  And we didn’t think the scenery was as impressive as we were thinking it’d be.  We agreed that we’d probably never go back (not that we really go anywhere twice with so much of the world to see), but even though we didnt’ really enjoy it, it was an experience and we don’t regret the experience.  Try to make the best of it… and now you know what its like there.

Like Wishywashy said virginia highlands is cool, downtown Decatur, Lenox mall, little five points, piedmont park, stone mountain, Atlantic station, the high museum of art, fernbank, etc.

…and all of these places are waaaay closer to you than Anna ruby falls. That’s actually NOT atlanta lol!

If you want to venture further out, check out downtown Roswell, the Roswell river landing,  Serenbe, and lake lanier.

From what you described I can totally see why you would think ATL sucks! You can’t jist visit places mentioned in a pamphlet lol.

If you are looking for some cool bars/nightlife let me know. I have plentry of recommendations.
