I haven't had a pet since I've been in my career, but we are getting a dog on monday and I would 100% call in sick if I had to :)

Yes, several times. My dog had Giardia once which was terrible.

Yes I have.  My Siamese who eats EVERYTHING ate a dinner plate sized hole out of a curtain.  Needless to say, he was very sick and almost needed surgery.

But I am 100% honest about it.

But the Fed Gov has a very good work/life balance and supports that kind of thing (within reason) anyways

@ Pitbulllover:  How did it turn out??? :((( Poor baby!

Yes, I have. I'd rather take a day off work than come to do a dead pet if they take a turn for the worse in the middle of the day!

I definitely would, but hopefully I would have a job where I could just tell them the truth.

Animals are literally a part of peoples' families, in many cases. I hope that, some day, most jobs will accept a sick pet as a valid reason for staying home.

Ugh! Yes! My dog had a SUPER bad virus once, and needed to be rushed to the vet, and then supervised for 24 hours. I called my boss in a panic right after I discovered the problem (She's a really cool). I ended in coming in late that morning, and the guy I was dating at the time stayed with Payton.

Yup, i had to leave work to relieve DH at the ER vet. My boss gave me a hard time though, I asked her how would she feel if her daughter had a broken leg? I reminded her animals still feel pain and then I left. I quit shortly after.

@Oneeleven: umm it was awful. There were piles of poop all over the house. Poor boy couldnt control himself and he was so ashamed because he never has accidents. It was only a couple days of that and then he was fine. He had to eat white rice and boiled chicken for a few days (which he loved) to get his stomach back to normal. Giardia is so common too so we always hope he doesnt get it again!

@OttawaBride2011: YES!! My cats are my children and I'm so protective of them. J laughs at me sometimes because I spoil them so much. They're my babies! And if one of them isn't doing too well, or I think I need to keep an eye on them... Yes, I stay home.

Yep, was going to today because my puppy was acting sick last night but looks much better.  My office is full of animal lovers so they understand.  But I usually work from home when I do.

I have called out of work (but was honest about it) when my dachshund slipped a disk in his back and I had to take him to the vet.

i didn't call in sick because we have a very generous PTO policy and we group sick with vacation and my boss is very understanding when I need to take time off.  The last time I had to leave work was to go put my cat to sleep.  I decided to come back to work because it helped keep my mind off things.

I have not, my husband sort of did. He's a naval officer, in May our cat Larry was succumbing to cancer. My husband got up for work and a few minutes later woke me up with tears in his eyes saying he thought it was time to put him down (I had felt this way for about a week). It was 5 a.m. so he went into work. At 8 he called to make an appointment at our vet. After the appointment was made he talked to his chief as well as the captain of the ship, everyone was suprisingly understanding and even had stories of their own. I could have brought Larry in myself, but it was nice having my husband with me. I hate putting animals down. It's horrible.

Just had this conversation at work this morning. Another nurse was chastised by another bc she called crying and saying she couldn't come in bc she might have to put her dog down due to his illnesss. The other nurse basically laughed at her. I got a little po'd so to speak and went off. My dogs are family to us. I freaked out when my older lab started acting strange yesterday and just laid in the yard, in the rain and wouldn't come in. They need TLC just as much if they are ill and if something happened to my dogs I'd be a basket case. No I, grateful I haven't had to miss work but I wouldn't think twice about it.

I did last week! My poor Marley broke out in itchy red bumps all over his body which the vet ruled as a severe allegic reaction to his new treats. He also had pneumonia. I had to monitor him for 24 hours.

Absolutely and it will probably happen again. If they are sick, need attention/monitoring and I have to go to work they come with me. They are my "children."

I haven't ever had to (thankfully) but I definitely would.  I imagine I would have to state a family emergency or something, as I don't think "sick dog" would fly, even though she IS my daughter, no doubt about it.

I did a few times actually. My cat got his teeth cleaned and had a REALLY bad reaction to the anesthesia (took him three days to come out of it) and when he finally did, his legs were paralyzed. I was a mess and my boss was really understanding and let me take off work to take care of him. After about a week, he regained the use of his legs, but man, was it a hard week.

No, I think I would be too embarrassed to, I'd have to make an excuse. If it were serious, then of course I am not going to let me dog sit at home in pain or bleeding or something. But if they have the sniffles, they are on their own for the next 8-9 hours....

No but I've asked my boss if I could work from home while I was dogsitting once so I could take care of the dog. He was super stressed and barking all day and actually hurting himself :(

Oh yes! My pup has been very ill since birth, and was born with a fatal condition. We've done everything to save his life, even traveling to NYC for two surgeries. We each had to take a week off for those events! He's had 5 surgeries in all, and I'm glad to say is now finally a happy and healthy pup!

Now I work from home so I don't have to worry about it :)

i have had staff that have attempted ot use sick leave to care for pet - it didnt go down well with their manager and the  managment team, comments are still made and their sick leave claim was denied and they had to use annual/vacation leave

ive also had a staff member ask me if they can bring a sick pet in - i said yes as long as it was kept in the warehouse (document storeage only and its about 30ft away) and they clean up any mess it made

we had another staff member that tried to bring in his perfectly healthy pet into the office - he was told very quickly to get it the **** out immediately

I haven't yet, but I would if the situation came up. As a college student with a part time job though, I'd do anything I could to have someone else (FI, friend, parent) take care of my cat while I worked... I need the money. And I'd probably just say it was me. Hopefully when I'm employed full time with sick days and vacation days and such, I'll be able to be honest.
