I know most people say that they can never wear their BM dress again, but have any of you actually worn your BM dress again?

I've been in 3 weddings and have never worn the dresses again.  One was in a color I hated and an odd style (donated it to Goodwill!), one was just not my style and the other was ill-fitting and a weird length (tea length just isn't flattering on many people).  I love my friends, but not the dresses they chose. ;)

I am interested to see if people have worn their dresses again.  I don't know anyone IRL who has done it.

Yes, it was an off the rack dress and it was more of a cottony material and a pale yellow.  I love it!  Plus it was less expensive than a "real" bridesmaid dress.

I have never worn any of the bridesmaid dresses I have and probably never will (unless it's to an ugly bridesmaid dress party!). I specifically choose mine so the girls could wear them again. I am even considering ordering one for myself! :)

Nope. The dress is very pretty, just too fancy to wear.

I've worn one. It was a DB tea length, in Victorian Lilac. I think it looked better the second time around.

I've been in 3 weddings and have never reworn the bridesmaid dress.  However, back when I was in college, I found the prettiest bridesmaid dress at a bridal salon that was going out of business.  You really couldn't even tell the dress was a bridesmaid dress, and I paid only $50 for it!  I wore it to a formal my sorority was having, and it looked great!

I have worn BM dresses again.  A couple of them I cut up and altered to be a bit more my style, but others were perfect for nice dinners out or the nicer dinners on a cruise.  However, most of my friends have had more casual weddings with shorter dresses, so I can see where it would be more difficult if the dresses were really fancy.

I have an Aria BM knee length dress that's green... I feel like it's totally un-rewearable.  I don't think the dresses my BMs wore are re-wearable either... they definitely screaaammmm "bridesmaid dress".

No I will never be wearing my bridesmaid dress again. I only have one and it's a tealish color I don't care for.  And it doesn't provide the support I need in the chest area.  Not to toot my own horn, but the bridesmaids dresses I chose were off the rack, and very cute in a normal everyday color.  So I know my bridesmaids can wear them again.  I kind of want one for myself :)

My sister's BM dress was a two piece, and altering the corset top cost a fortune.  But it fit me so well afterward I wore it several times with black slacks as an evening outfit.  I also rewore a long BM dress from a diferent wedding as part of a Halloween costume once.

I re-wore one that was a regular Church type dress from Chadwick's again. Actually I probably woere it twice till something weird happened to it when it was stored for the winter in the attic.  One would never see the light of day again and one I could wear as an evening gown if I lost the 20 pounds I've gained.

i have never been a bridesmaid, but was very conscious of the problem of not being able to wear the dress again.  so i asked all of my BMs to choose their own black dress, with certain guidelines of course, so that they can wear it again.  one of my BMs got her dress at target!

Yup!  I have a chinese red dupioni silk knee length dress by Siri that I wore for my sister's wedding.  I have worn it twice since (and get many compliments!) No one can tell it is a BM dress!

I have not been a bridesmaid - yet, ask me again in 4 months - but I think they are hard to wear again, period. How many of us are going to occassions (other than weddings) where dress that fancy is required? And you can't wear them to weddings unless you want to look like a bridesmaid!

I didn't think about cruises though...I have never been on one but it might be nice to have a formal dress for some of a cruise's more formal events.

I wore my red dress to a 25th anniversary event in December and then to a holiday part for my office this year.  Since it is short, it is versatile and can serve as a cocktail dress.

Long dresses I think would be harder to re-wear.  This is the only BM dress I have worn again.

I have one that a definitely would rewear (and plan to!), but just haven't yet. It is very long and formal, but I'm marrying into the military so chances are I'll be going to at least a few more formal events.

The 3 BM dresses I was forced to buy I haven't worn again.  One has slight potential so I held on to it.  The other 2 I had cleaned and then donated to Fairy Godmother's (http://www.fairygodmothersinc.com/about/index.html) so a girl that might not otherwise get to go to prom can.  The dresses are perfect for a teenagers prom- but that's about it.

The 1 dress I got to pick out for myself (for my sister's wedding, I was MOH) doesn't look anything like a BM dress and was on clearance at DB for $60.  I hung on to that one and will definitely wear it again.

One bridesmaid dress I haven't worn again-- it was a long Tiffany blue Audrey Hepburn style dress.  I still love it, but probably can't pull it off at anything but a wedding.

The other, I hated at the time I had to wear it.  It wasn't even really a dress.  It was a linen shirt and skirt combo. I grumbled and whined and wore it grudgingly at the time.

I definitely never wear the 2 pieces together.  But you know what?  I wear that stinking shirt *all the time*!

I should have been happy at the time that I had to wear such a simple outfit... It has been so useful!

Erindesmar, those dresses are too cute! I would wear it again too!

I'm going to be a BM in my friends wedding in June and I will NOT be wearing it again, I'm 5'3 and the dress goes down to like mid calf which might be fine it it was a flowy dress, but its fitted. So at that length and my height, no bueno and to think it was $170! Ebay it will go!

I have yet to be a bridesmaid, but I know my MOH wore the dress she wore at my wedding to another wedding as a guest.  Score! And I thought it would be tough being that it was tangerine and all.

My friend chose the Sophia in black from J. Crew, so it's completely re-wearable.  But I haven't done so yet, since I don't like wearing black to weddings (unless the bride has told me to!) and I haven't had any other fancy enough occasions since my friend's wedding.  But it's a perfect LBD, so I'm sure I will wear it again sooner or later.

I've been a BM 4 times and I've worn two of the dresses again...
1st Dress was a Jessica McClintontock Princess dress in light blue with a TON of glitter tulle on th bottom. I was a sophmore in college and I wore the dress again for a Founder's Day dance at the school.
2nd Dress - Although I loved it, I have not use for a full lenght purple dress
3rd Dress - Didn't like it at the time and would never wear it again
4th Dress - I got to choose any tea length black dress, I found this one on sale @ Macy's and I've worn it 3 times since :)

The only reason that I've worn all but 2 again is because I live in an area of the country that celebrates Mardi Gras, and three of the dresses were perfect Mardi Gras ball gowns.  One was too short to wear as a ball gown, and one...no way.  I hated it from the get-go and knew that I would never wear it again.  (I hate butt bows.)

The two that I didn't wear, I donated to a local consignment shop, and both have been bought. :-)

I think it's a bonus if you can wear a bridesmaid dress, but certainly not a requirement. I'm having a less formal affair, so my BM dresses are shorter, and they're in a style that I think doesn't scream "bridesmaid dress"! I'd almost like to get it myself and wear it with a cute cardigan. I also put $75 toward each girl's dress so they only had to pay $30 for it, and they can make their own decision for hair and accessories.

That being said, I don't think brides who have their BMs buy a dress that can't be reworn should be made to feel guilty. Especially if you have a more formal wedding that calls for floor-length dresses, it's difficult to rewear them. And, depending on the BM, they might never attend another more formal occassion that would call for rewearing a BM dress, even one that could be reworn. That doesn't mean a bride should have her BMs pick up a cotton sundress at Target for $20 if that doesn't suit her wedding.

I don't think it's much different than a prom dress - when will we ever wear those again? True, the prom dress is for our own prom and it's our choice, versus the BM dress that is for a friend's wedding and not really our own event, but sometimes we do things for our friends that cost us money and don't benefit us in any way.

Bottom line, I think we as brides should pay attention to what our BMs like and what they can afford. If we can give them a dress they can wear again, that's just an added bonus. :)

The token time I was a bridesmaid, the dresses were handmade by someone. The thing is that I've lost weight since then and so the dress doesn't fit anymore, so I'd have to get it altered. But if I do get it altered, I'll probably jazz it up a bit, so it is less "bridesmaid-y."

    But it looked pretty good:

Why do brides always say that?  'You can definitely wear it again!!!'  I have been in about 4 weddings, all of the BM dresses were not my style and for formal weddings.

Where exactly will I wear a full lenth, taffeta, tourquoise dress again?  Maybe to prom in the 80s, but not foreseeable in my near future...

I always think it's funny that brides are convinced that their dresses will be worn over and over again...

Did you rewear your prom dress?  Or your homecoming dress?

    No.

You wore it once, took lots of pictures, admired yourself in it, then donated it or sold it or gave it away or passed it down to your little sis (who didn't wear it either).

Yes the BMs will look beautiful, and they may love the dress, but probably they'll always see it as a BM dress and just won't rewear it.  (Ever seen 27 Dresses?)

i have two dresses, one of which i could feasibly rewear if i could just get my lazy self down to the seamstress to get it shortened. now that i think about it, i wonder if i could convince my mom to do it for me. hmm.

but other than that, i probably wouldn't wear them again, as they're both full length gowns.

mightysapphire, i actually DID rewear my prom dress. twice actually.

Short answer? Nope, I've never reworn anything.

I've only ever worn long dresses as a bridesmaid... and now the bridesmaids in my wedding want to wear long dresses - what's up with that?!? Fine by me, whatever! I love short dresses, I think they'd be WAY more re-wearable. But I'm cool with their preferencec.

The styles of dresses I've worn in the past are not my style at all. Plus, with the amount of beading on the long dresses I've worn, I don't think they could ever be made into an appropriate short dress.

Only one- from my sisters wedding and it was black. I also had a say in what style it was, so that was helpful. The rest have been donated, and I sold one at a garage sale for $5. I was impressed someone wanted it for that much. It was hideous!

I've been in 4 weddings with 4 terrible dresses that I will never wear again.  Each bride has told me that she specifically picked the dresses so that they were styles that we the bridesmaids could wear again.  I guess it just goes to show you that it depends on your taste as to what can be worn again.
