Is this a good or bad idea? She offered to have it done. It's actually the wedding dress that she wore for my parents' vow renewal for their 25th anniversary. Those weirdos threw another full blown wedding. :p (Their fortieth anniversary is a day after our wedding, so it's almost like they're doing it again! lol).
It's an adorable Carolina Hererra dress. The bottom has an organza overlay with big dots on it. I forgot what the neckline looks like. It sort of works with my wedding dress because it has a dot overlay on it as well.
I don't know if this is a bad decision or not. I'm never going to be able to wear it as is, because it's a (bridal) 6 and she's only 5'9". It's pretty much infant sized for me. :p But do I save it for my children?
I say if you can make it work, go for it! Sounds like a great dress.
I think its a really nice touch to wear it at your rehearsal. I say do it! I have to add...as a short bride (5'4), I'm really curious now how tall you if 5'9 is infant size for you!
I'm 6'3". I was thinking of doing it sort of on the retro side, short but with a fun fluffy skirt. She also suggested getting a wide headband made with the extra. I think that might be excessive, but it could be really cute with that sort of dress.
Thanks you guys. :)
I need to take a picture of the dress when I get to my parents house so I can give a better idea of the dress. :)
i think that's a great idea! i also love that your mom is totally on board with you altering her dress. please post photos if you go through with it :-)
I definitely will! She was actually the one who suggested it. I was pleasantly surprised. :)
I think you should go for it!! Who's to say if your kids would even like it by the time they are of marrying age?? Definitely show us pics if you end up doing it!
Good point! I can't save it forever. I love the idea of doing the rehearsal in a mini-wedding dress. It's so fun and bride-y.
Definitely do it! The dress sounds gorgeous. And please share pics?
I will take pics of the actual dress on Wednesday. I'm going to see the 'rents that day. :)
She also just offered to have her original wedding gown from 1970 made into a dress as well. What a sweet Mommy. :)
I wonder what in the world I'll do! I could have one as a going away outfit, perhaps. :)
That sounds like such a cute (and very meaningful) idea! I say go for it!
I'm trying to think of other uses for it as well. It could also be used for making a clutch? I'm not sure if 70's lace would work for my dress. We shall see. I really shouldn't be going into so much 'What to do what to do!' until I get home to SEE the dresses again. :)
i love that you are doing that! i actually just had my mom's engagement party dress altered so i could wear it to my engagement party 2 weeks ago. it was so cool to wear it and she loved that i was able to incorporate it into my wedding festivities. she wore a blue wedding dress (which would never fit me- she is tiny) but we were thinking of ways to incorporate the fabric into the wedding as well- i like your idea of a clutch! have fun and definitely post pictures.
I'm 5'10 and people are always telling me what an Amazon I am (probably doens't hurt that I wear heals a lot) so it cracks me up to have 5'9" discribed as infant sized =D
Anyway, I think it's a fab fab fab idea. Love the sentiment. So if you've got the budget, you've got the time (as in it's not going to stress you out), and you're mom is on board with having her dress dismantled I'd DEFENITELY do it! Better yet if you can turn it into something that will be truely re-wearable.
And if you have extra scraps you could get them preseved along with your dress (assuming you go that route) for your daughter to use! Awww!
I have a bit of a dream of using my mom's wedding dress to construct a wedding dress for myself. I think it's such a beautiful way to honor the marriage that you come from. But like you I'm much bigger than my mom so I'd be a complete re-construction project! I guess I've got a thing for sentimental wedding stuff.
This is a great idea! go for it! the only thing i can add to the above is save the extra fabric that the seamstress will cut off! you never know what you can use it for! (i'm a quilter, i save EVERY scrap of fabric, haha)
I love this idea, what a great way to honour your mom, I can wait to see the photos.
@Fifty... Did you take pics?? Are you going to do it?
I LOVED the idea and I think since the dresses have a common pattern element, you'll be a fashion genius with a great story...
:)
I think this sounds like a gorgeous idea. I love it! I wore my grandmother's tea-length peach lace wedding dress for our rehearsal dinner and it was so special. I wish I had a chance to wear it again. My mom is arguing that I should wear it to a cousin's wedding next summer since it's peach. I'm not sure if it's too bridal, or if I just think of it as bridal since I know it's a wedding dress...
I love this idea, too.
Save the trimmings - they could be used for alterations for your daughter's or granddaughter's wedding rituals.
And the trimmings could be used for a future ring pillow.
From the sounds of it, your parents love the big party! Since she suggested it, you should go for it.
I absolutely love that idea. Even if you don't end up using the dress I'd definitely use the veil or something else from her original wedding outfit. Love this idea so much I'm thinking of how to salvage my mothers wedding dress from the 80's (think poof and lace sleeves).
i'm really interested in what your moms dress looked like... i'm planning on doing the same thing with my mom's dress and i want to see what you come up with!
@fifty.. I'm taking the train from my mom's wedding dress and having added to a completely new dress. I'm a sucker for an heirloom and three brides have worn the dress in my family (my aunt, my mom and my cousin.) I say if she's cool with it.. take it and make it your own. My dress wasn't quite my style but my designer is taking it and adding a little twist of my own flair. Plus I'm knocked out my something old and something new!
What a great idea! Even if it doesn't work out completely - the rehearsal dress, in my opinion, isn't has a huge of a deal as the wedding dress or reception dress (where a ton more people will see you in it.) I like the sentiment and can't wait to see how it turns out!
@ LeahNHeath>> that's cool that 3 women have already used it - makes it more meaningful
Ok, so I'm a bad person and got too flustered when we were pulling it out of storage to take pictures. I really do need to take pictures, and will, but I drew a sketchy of it until then. :p

The top is ivory-sequined with long sleeves and an almost-backless-v-back. There's a satin sash around the natural waist, with a big floofy flower dude. Then, the skirt is full with tons o' tulle and a big-dotted overlay. :) Sorry this took me so long. lol. I just finally did a post about it on le blog and forgot about this thread! :p
P.S. I know the image is a little cut off. I'm too lazy to re-export it smaller out of flash right now. :p
yOU DREW THAT...THATS AWESOME! I cant wait to see pics of it! You can wear it for the dinner and maybe for a 2nd dress on your wedding day. your mom sounds great. Good luck with it...cant wait! Congrats.
Thanks! I can't wait to figure out what we can/will do with it. :p
LOVE This! I actually did the same thing with my mother's original wedding dress for my rehearsal. It was a fairly simple 70's style gown with long sleeves and lace overalay over the bodice. I had the sleeves removed, had it shortened and then added a belt. It was a HUGE success and she was SO happy to have me wear it. Can't wait to see how yours turns out!
the only pics that were taken are on my parents camera and they haven't emailed them to me yet... i'll be sure to pass one along when i get them though.
SO crazy that you just did you blog about this today... i FINALLY got the pics from my dad last night... let me see if this works...
ok, so the one of me and my mom in the newly altered dress worked, but the other one, of my mom in the original, didn't scan...
anyway, i had the sleeves removed, shortened the dress, and removed a tie back sash that was around the natural waist (replaced with a silver skinny belt a la jcrew)
GREAT idea! Can you incorporate both of her dresses somehow? Or use some of the tulle for your veil?
