What did you all do to prevent packages from being shipped to your home while you were away on your honeymoon? We live far from our friends and family, so most people are shipping gifts to us, but I don't want packages sitting in front of our door while we're away for 2 weeks. I just got off the phone with UPS and apparently I have to contact all of my wedding guests and tell them not to ship us anything while we're not home, which seems absolutely ridiculous to me.
It's not possible, as they all live a plane ride away. The friends we have here aren't really close enough to us to ask them to do a huge favor like that every day.
It's an extra expense and I see that you're pretty close to your wedding but is there a UPS store nearby? You can get a mailbox and use that as your shipping address for your registry (it's not a PO Box, so everyone can deliver to it). We did this and it was a lifesaver; our UPS store was very gracious about holding the packages during the wedding and honeymoon, since we gave them a heads up. Our box was around $20 a month.
Do you have a wedding website? Or have you not sent out your invitations yet? If you have the time I would just add a small slip of paper -- it will be very helpful for your guests because they wont want their gifts sitting outside either!! Also maybe you could put a note on your online registries?? That could be on the same page as like the payment information? Try contacting the stores you have registered. If worse comes to worse I would send out a group email to a few important people and say to please pass the word along. I think gifts being in tact are more important then etiquitte right now!
You can contact the stores where you registered you can have them hold deliveries until a specified date. Of course that only helps you if everyone is ONLY using your registries for their gift giving. You might also try calling your local UPS and FedEx dispatch offices (not the 1-800 main number, but where your boxes go before they deliver it to you) and find out what they advise.
I'm pretty sure that whatever delivery service you use, the drivers have to get a signature before they can release the box, so at the worst you might just come home to a door full of 'attempted delivery slips'. Good luck!
You could spread out the friends you ask to come check to make it less of a burden on them. If you have five friends they could each come to check twice (since UPS delivers on weekdays only).
FYI local FedEx's usually do not list their local numbers. I work for FedEx , If you call through the 800 number and explain the situation about a week or so befor you leave we can usually hold the packages at the local branch untill you are back home. We do it all the time for snow-birders. I'm sure UPS will do the same if your plead your case. Good Luck!!

Any thoughts?
