black and gold are both neutrals so you could theoretically throw in any color that you like. Use the black and third color (like green) as your main colors and only use the gold as your "pop" color, for accents (jewlery, ribbons, etc)
navy blue and yellow are great together. since your wedding is still a ways off, probably no one will notice that you used the same color scheme. Your family members might, but unless they're anything but drama queens/kings, they'll probably just think it's flattering that you chose to emulate them!
Have you already visited/interviewed florists? I found this really helpful when making the color decision and my wedding vision took a turn for the better after seeing her suggestions :)
Black and gold are neutral so you really could do anything you wanted to with it. Green, red, purple...
Navy and yellow is also really pretty. I also agree that no one will be bothered by you using the same color scheme as someone else.
My colors were navy, yellow, and white so I vote for that! I am still in love with the color scheme even after the wedding has come and gone. I love all things nautical and vintage and it gave me the option to do both. I did all yellow flowers in non matching milk glass vases and it was so cool to see it pulled together. There are some pictures up on my wedding site if you want to see http://www.kevinandmaria.com/Wedding_Site/Sale.html.
Here's a link to some great google images http://www.google.com/search?q=navy+and+yellow+wedding&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=-AmyTb7BJoSCsQPq4_H5Cw&ved=0CBkQsAQ&biw=1110&bih=606
We had all the groomsmen in non-matching yellow ties from etsy. My MOH carried an all yellow bouquet and the ringbearer had a yellow searsucker pillow (from the same tie people). I can email you pics if you want or give you vendor contacts :-)
You could always do Gray and yellow if you want to be a little different from your friend. Still very cute and vintage. Or yellow and a different shade of blue like aqua http://www.pearlseventsblog.com/2009/06/yellow-aqua-wedding-inspiration.html

FI and I got engaged in August, and while we have some of the main things pinned down, we're starting on the rest this summer. I am feeling myself going back and forth between color schemes.
Option 1: Black and gold. This is my original first thought. The colors would represent our alma mater, because that's where we met. It was a big part of our relationship. FI likes the idea, but wants to make sure our wedding isn't themed around our school. He wants to incorporate another color. He thinks that we won't be able to do much with just black and gold.
So, we thought about adding in a shade of green. However, I'm not finding a lot that I like. I have seen pink mixed in, which looks good, but I am not a pink person.
Option 2: Navy blue and yellow. I like how that looks, but a very close family friend (I consider them family) just used that color scheme in their wedding, so I'm hesitant to use it in ours.
I have no other options...I'm not really sure what I want to do, lol! Our wedding is on June 23rd, 2012. Any ideas/feedback would be greatly appreciated :-).
