We're honeymooning the end of August through early September. We tend not to be the luckiest people in the world, so we are steering clear of the Caribbean and Florida (sadly). We are considering Hawaii or Costa Rica.

I'm so overwhelmed with all of the choices in both places and I could really use some recommendations! We'd prefer not to go to a "family resort" to avoid crowds of kids. Love them, but.... not for the honeymoon :) We are active and love the outdoors, so we'd want to snorkle, kayak, hike, etc.

If you have any experience in either place or any advice I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

I just planned a great Costa Rica honeymoon but am afraid of the rain that time of year (we are getting married in Sept). The 2 resorts we were looking at are the Tabacon Grand Spa in the rainforest/jungle/volcano area and then the Hilton by the beach. We want adventure and then relaxation. Good luck!

We went to Maui in early September 2010.  It was great!  Weather was excellent all 10 days we were there.  Only issue - time zone change is so great, we were up very early and going to bed early, but was easy to get up and maximize the day if you like adventures!

Wow, I've been to both and that is a tough choice!  I think Costa Rica could be more of an adventure and different experience than Hawaii.  I did zip lining and white water rafting while there.  The wildlife and culture is completely different than anything you'd find in the US & Hawaii.  The scenery is beautiful also.  I don't think its as relaxing though since theres so much to see and do.

On the other hand Hawaii, is beautiful also.  I think it has better beaches - but that could be because I wasnt looking for beaches in Costa Rica.  The islands are smaller, and quicker to cover so there'd be more relaxing time - unless you try to visit a ton of islands.  If you go to hawaii, the crater hike on the Big Island is great.  Though if you go to Costa Rica, you may see Arenal in action.  I think Hawaii has a lot of little hikes, but after a while, waterfalls arent so impressive anymore.

You can't lose either way, both would be a great experience!

I guess it comes down to:

    Relaxing & Beautiful (Hawaii)

    or

Things to do & Beautiful (Costa Rica)

    haha :)

For me...Hawaii. But I just want to RELAX on our Honeymoon. I want my biggest worry to be where my next drink is coming from and if I have enough sunscreen on. ;)

I've been to Costa Rica and one of my good friends is Costa Rican. It is very beautiful and there is a ton to do. But in September, it is especially rainy in the southwestern part of the country (Pacific side), and can be dangerous due to landslides. If you don't mind it raining a bit every afternoon, stick to the Caribbean side, where it isn't as bad. There are some great deals to be had in the rainy season!

Oh, and if you don't go for your honeymoon, I highly recommend putting CR toward the top of your travel list - December/January have been the best times for us to go!

We weren't that bothered by the rains because the tours all take place in the morning and the (warm & romantic) rains came in the late afternoons. The place we stayed had everything you are looking for, all inclusive, great adventure tours, and oh yeah; no kids! (it is a little villa and you have it all to yourselves).

We visited Tabacon as well .... also very cool!
