i was born & raised in Hilo.

I prefer the Waikoloa/Kona side for vacations.  That side gets more sunny days than Hilo.  Also, there are nicer beaches (but also more crowded).  A very popular one for tourists & locals is Hapuna Beach.  If you rent a car, from Kona it would take you about 2 hrs to drive to Hilo and an additional 30-40 mins to Kilauea Volcano National Park.

If you can afford it, the Four Seasons near Kona is outstanding.  Like over the top.  The Sheraton is really nice too (no beaches, but good pools)

You’ll definitely want a car for day trips to the other side of the island, but there is a lot more sun on the Kona side
