Oh Bees, I am finally engaged! And it was a TOTAL surprise!
We always go on a trip just before school starts back, and we love the mountains, so we found an amazing cabin in the Smokies. His mother gifted us the trip (his birthday is next week), so we were already super excited. I had had a feeling for a couple of weeks that he might propose on the trip, but I couldn’t be sure.
Now, we designed my ring last year, and it was completed around March of this one. Since then, it has sat in its box on our dresser, in plain view everyday. I figured if he was going to propose on the trip, he would have to hide the box somewhere, so I tried to leave him alone with the suitcase as much as I could (I do most of our packing), but the ring never moved! Then at last minute, he decided he wanted to take his laptop, so he packed the laptop bag privately at one end of our house. I ended up being the last one through the house before we left, and as I did my walkthrough to make sure we hadn’t forgotten anything and that the pets’ things were in the right place for the housesitter. I took one glance into the bedroom, and the ring box was where it has always been. I sighed, but was happy that I knew it wasn’t happening, so I wouldnt’ let that be the focus of the trip.
The first night of our journey, we stopped in my hometown to visit with my parents, and he got a about 2 minutes alone time with them while I was in the bathroom of the restaurant. I had known that he wanted to talk to my parents before proposing, but totally figured that he was asking so taht he could propose later in the week/month (our 8 year anniversary is also his birthday!).
We made it to the cabin, and had a fun night in town, eating at a local restaurant and people-watching. We got to use the jacuzzi and hot tub that night, and it was just all awesome. The next morning, we got up, made breakfast, then went on a day of sight-seeing at museums. We drove over to the next state for fun, ending the day with an aquarium.
We drove back up the mountain, he cooked a delicious steak dinner, and we had a soak in the hot tub. We had been planning to drink when we were done, so I asked him to open my champagne ( I always have champagne on vacation.) He opened it in the kitchen, while I sat in the living room watching Food Network (lol), and he started talking about how he couldn’t believe that we had been together almost eight years, and that the trip had been so wonderful that he didn’t want anything to end. He handed my my champagne glass and got down one one knee, pulling out the small porcelain box we had picked up at one of the museums earlier in the day. Then he proposed!! I squealed and said absolutely yes, and it was glorious!
The next morning, we stopped for breakfast on the way out of town, and our waitress totally guessed immediately that we had just gotten engaged. It was great. We then drove 7 hours home, to meet up with our friends at our usual bar night, where we then broke the news to everyone in person. Those we didn’t see on Wednesday night, we saw on Thursday, and I posted our engagement online today. And I had to tell the Bee!!
Now, for the ring porn (at last! at last!)
so I really hope that is not enormous, and i heartily apologize if it is! (if it is, and someoen cna tell me how to shrink it, that would rock!)
Ring Story: the outer two stones come from my FI’s (AHH!) grandmother and great-grandmother on his mother’s side. The center stone and halo are from my family- the center stone was one of the diamonds my father gave my mother when I was born, and the halo come from her sister, my aunt. We designed it so that it can be an heirloom we pass on to our kids, a ring symbolizing our families coming together.
that pic has terrible detail, but it does have Emily Post, so surely it equals out?
