I don't know if there is a "norm" for this. My guy bought the ring at the end of Aug, got it in early Sept, and proposed in late Oct. Often times I hear it burns a "hole" in guys' pockets and they propose right away. Other guys I've heard wait a year+! When do YOU think he'll propose?
i think it depends on the guy. my fi had the ring (not from the store, he just had to ask his mom for it b/c it's a family ring) for 2 days before he proposed. actually more like a day and a half.
@corgitales i have no idea! =) my guess would be in the next couple of weeks but i don't really have any clue...
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! so exciting! not sure there is a norm either but my FI had the ring for 8 months before he proposed. I totally knew he bought it and even had a hunch where it was hidden..but i never looked.
so excited for you!!! hang in there, it could happen TONIGHT!!!!!!!!
@krissy that is such a long wait!
My FH had it for about two weeks...I didn't know though! He said once it was even in his pocket and he was considering proposal that night but waited two more days since I was having a stressful day that day...he made an excuse to run down to his car and hide it!
well my partner had my ring made my uncle who lives over in NZ and he was faxing and calling him for a few months before he was actually flying over to see the family, the night after they flew in and we went over to my mums place to see them (and when my uncle gave him the ring) it was the next day that he took me out onto the Jetty were we first sat and talk for like 4hrs *gets all teary eyed*
took my guy less than 60 seconds because he got the call that the ring was ready, i told him to get is **** down there asap and as soon as i walked thru his front door he sat me down and put that baby on my finger
ive heard of some guys holding onto the ring for months - i would rather strip wallpaper off the walls with my eyelids than wait that long!
.... honestly, all guys are different. How well can he keep a secret?
Yeah, it totally depends on his personality. Fiance and I went ring shopping together and I was there when he bought the ring but we had to send it to get resized. He told me that he wanted the actual proposal to be a surprise, so he would NOT tell me when the ring was ready. He gave the jeweler his cell phone number instead of our home number so that I wouldn't know when they called to say the ring is ready.
He actually proposed the very night he went back to get the ring. Later on he told me that on his way to the jeweler he was thinking about the perfect proposal and how much time he'd need to plan it out, maybe weeks or even months, but then after he had the ring he got really antsy and just HAD to do it, and on his drive home he got inspired and came up with the proposal, and so we got engaged that very same night. I was certainly not expecting it so soon after the ring was bought!
thank you everyone for your input! my so is not particularly good at keeping secrets and we picked out the ring before thanksgiving... so... i just don't know! i'm hoping that it's this weekend but i know he wants to do something special and surprise me so i'm not sure how long that will take. maybe another few weeks? but i'll keep everyone posted and thanks again for your comments! =)
My husband had the ring for two weeks before we proposed. But I don't think there's a set guideline we can tell you, unfortunately :(
Just enjoy the anticipation for now, and keep us posted :)
Haha. I know exactely what you mean by him calling you into a room or using a serious tone. I jumped at that too! For a while then nothing happened and I got over it then one day is called me into a room WITH a serious voice and I didn't see it coming! I was completely surprised for being so obsessed a few weeks earlier.
my fiance had my ring for 2 months... he wanted to go to wine country to propose and I just didn't get it and had to keep postponing for work. Finally when I got up there, he proposed! Be patient (as hard as it is!) - I'm sure your soon to be FI just wants to find the right time.
I was super excited when my fiance proposed. I thought he was lying whenever he proposed. Seriously, I told him it was a really mean joke and that he shouldn't lie to me. We had been talking about getting married for awhile now but I never thought we'd be getting engaged so soon. But I was really excited once I realized that it was for real. haha.
i don't know what most people did, but i found out that my FI had my ring 3 months before he proposed. we were going to chicago together for NYE so he knew exactly what day he was going to do it, but i guess he got the ring way in advance.
now i feel bad because i definitely laid on the guilt trip about proposing to me and he already had the ring, i just didn't know it lol poor guy
My guy gave me the ring the morning after he picked it up at the jewelers. He told me it was really hard to hold off even that long, but he forced himself to wait because he had something planned and didn't want to blow it.
My sense is that most guys don't have the patience to hold a ring for weeks and weeks before proposing, but I'm sure everyone's different. How is your guy at the holidays? Does he buy your gifts in August and stash them away without a word? Or does he come right home from the store and immediately give you what he bought you (or blurt out what it is)? That should give you a clue about what he'll do with your ring.
I recently found out FI bought the ring March 22nd of last year (no idea when he started looking) even though he didn't propose until June 27th, so a little over 3 months. That June weekend was always his plan since we were going on a weekend getaway. I honestly have NO IDEA how he was able to keep it a surprise for so long, I truly had NO idea. All I can think about is all the bitchy whiny moments I had in that 3 month span and wonder if he ever looked up the return policy! =)
My FI had the ring less than 20 minutes. No joke.
He says he barely got to see it before he got so nervous/excited that he had to propose right then! (he picked it up from his sister's who had gotten it for him that day) After we drove away and stopped at a little spot near my friends house he suddenly got down on one knee right by the car!
I think every man is different. My FI says he was not planning on popping the question that night but he just couldn't wait. Some men want to plan a perfect moment to propose and some men are surprised by their own actions!
My only advice is just be as patient as possible and don't try to get any answers out of him! The moment will be perfect when it comes :)

so the boy definitely has the ring in his possession. i accidentally (seriously, accidentally!) found the packaging from it. so now i keep getting jumpy whenever he calls my name from the other room or he gets a serious tone in his voice!
i've been trying not to think about it (obviously we all know how hard that can be...) and have been keeping myself busy, but im kinda going crazy! i practically interrogated my mom on the phone to see if she knew what he was planning!
i guess my biggest question is, how long do most men hold onto the ring before proposing? i thought it was like maybe a week or two, but a girlfriend told me she thought it took most men about 4-6 months. eek!
anywho, thanks so much to all of you for being so supportive and understanding! i'd love to hear your opinions on how long you think it takes most men...
