I've never made it lol... But just be careful if any of his friends wanna come around.
@SoontobeMrsA: Oh, we'll be all on our onsie! I've barred the doors and locked the windows.
Made it last night, in the oven, and although I was hoping for a nice medium-rare, I got distracted and left it in the oven too long. Oh well, nothing gravy can't fix :P
In all seriousness, I make the best pot roast ever.
In the crockpot if you want the recipie.
@Gingersnap: pot roasts arent cooked to rare ever. They are cooked long and slow until fork tender. Did you make just a regular roast more like a roast beef from a cross rib or tenderloin?
I have only ever made it in the dutch oven, sorry no real advice!
(from allrecipies.com)
Directions: In a slow cooker, mix cream of mushroom soup, dry onion soup mix and water. Place pot roast in slow cooker and coat with soup mixture. Cook on High setting for 3 to 4 hours, or on Low setting for 8 to 9 hours.
*I add taters and carrots about and hour and half left of cooking. It's so easy and comes out perfect every single time.
ETA: You can also add a dash of adultry to make your pot roast *EXTRA* special.
Never made pot roast but I love the the pot roast and Johnny Depp topic, it always make sme laugh. :)
haha FI actually made the popcorn balls for tonight. It made me think of that other thread about popcorn. Oh and it's dipped in chocolate!
@lefeymw: Yup, just roast beef. *shrug* didn't know there was a difference! My family calls any huge hunk of beef a pot roast
Mmm...crock pot all the way.
Here's what we do. You will end up with a lot of broth/sauce, but FI tends to turn the leftovers into a stew with the broth so it's not really a waste for us.
In the crock pot, dissolve 2 packages of Club House Slow Cooker Pot Roast seasoning in 4 cups of water.
Add one medium can of diced tomatoes and a very small can of 8-vegetable juice (we find this really adds some richness) and stir until incorporated.
Position the roast in the center of the sauce mixture in the pot.
Add vegetables of your choice around the roast. We like to do thickly sliced carrots, halved or quartered new potatoes, and sliced celery. I'm going to throw in some green beans next time.
Cover and set to cook on High. Check for desired doneness after about 4 hours depending on the size of your roast (a 1kg roast is usually perfectly done to our taste by then).
Voila, dinner! I highly recommend spooning the broth over your roast slices and letting it soak in while it's still piping hot. You will end up with the most succulent meat ever and your tastebuds will think they've gone to heaven.
@panterapeach: I was just looking at that! I'm definitely going to use it.
@missfireslayer: haha it's all being used currently so I'll have to devise some clever apparatus to throw away instead.
@PinkMagnolia: Oh awesome.
Last time I used my crock pot and followed the directions on the Liptons Onion Soup Mix...it turned out delicious, perfectly cooked. YUM. I might have to make one this weekend!
bwahaha I had to click on this thread because of the title and lol'd when you said you would be dressing you husband up as Jonny Depp ahhaha.
I vote crock pot all the way, it always turns out more tender and juicy vs my dutch oven when I make it.
Not sure if you want it to fall apart or one you slice. If you want it to fall apart I add some beef boullion granules to hot water, about 1 1/2 cups and then I rub a little Lawrey's Seasoned Salt or Tastefully Simple Seasoned Salt on it and let it cook on low for about 8 hours. Then there is a bunch of juice left over and I transfer that into a saucepan and make my own gravy. :)
Pot roast actually sounds really good right now!
Just whatever you do, don't throw it out... or end up cheating on your hubby!
OMG Ina Garten has a recipe I believe it is called Company Pot Roast that is TO DIE FOR. My husband was literally licking the sauce off the plate. I saved the extra sauce and put it over egg noodles the next day. Absolutely delicious. I think the recipe calls for red wine - I used Sutter Home cabernet sauvignon.
crock pot is the best for pot roast! We make it with carrots, pearl onions, and potatoes. Mmm it's so good.
I love pot roast. I usually make mine in a heavy bottom pot on the stove. I rub it with seasoning, brown it, and pour 2 things of beef stock over it. Bring to a boil, reduce to medium, and simmer for like 8 hours. With an hour left, I throw in some new potatoes, carrots, and onion. Serve with egg noodles. Oh my gosh I want this now. Too late :-(
@SoontobeMrsA: She totally did. It's sacred! It's Tupperware!
Thank you all a million times over for your recipe's. I'm pleased to say that I went the crock pot route that many suggested, and it was amazing. I tried panterapeach's to start. There are too many good pot roast recipes on this page to pass up, so one by one I will try them all. First it was panterapeach's recipe, next week I believe it will be linguo42's, and so on.
Pot roast party at my place!
I've made it twice and both times....in the crockpot. It came out great.
I read this thread yesterday, and I had to go get a pot roast. Pot roast for dinner tonight! Yum. :)

With all the talk of it lately, I've been craving it! I've decided to forgo popcorn balls for the time being, however. Also, I will be dressing my husband up as Johnny Depp as he is already blond.

Anyhoo, I'm trying to decide between using my crock pot and just doing it the old fashioned way. I have a dodgy history with pot roast....recommendations? Recipes?
