Woo hoo join the club!!  I also bought my dress on Etsy, as well as my headpiece, sash, lots of centerpiece decor, personalized hangers, portions of bridesmaids and FI’s gifts, and that’s just for the wedding, I buy so much stuff off there in general!  I love it, you can find such a wide variety of stuff (although I will admit, it can be pricey).  My favorite is looking at clothing sellers!

So, I’m an advocate for Etsy however just keep in mind it is supposed to be a hand-made marketplace. If handmade is not important to you, I strongly encourage you to shop somewhere else, because buying non-handmade is encouraging Etsy to think that this sort of behavior is okay and Etsy is supposed to be supporting “The little guy” and people who actually hand make and toil over their items.

Etsy is a cheap way for factories, generally in China or Brazil, called Resellers to unload pre-fab factory made goods quickly and cheaply. This goes against everything Etsy is supposed to stand for, but they refuse to do anything about these resellers because they bring in an enormous amount of revenue for the company. They’ve essentially sold their soul to the devil.

So, my advice to you [And EVERYONE who wants to buy off Etsy] is to do your research on the product you want and the seller themselves. Don’t support resellers. Support hand crafted items.

Etsy is a bit of a sore subject to me. I come from a community of amazing crafters who have their businesses soly on Etsy and I’ve seen a lot of them have food taken out of their mouths and their children’s mouths because a reseller charges in and undercuts them.

@Hyperventilate:  Thanks for the info. I always try to keep buy my items from sellers based in the USA, and try to be as local as possible. which was awesome because I once had to return an item and I was able to walk to the seller’s studio. It was a wonderful, personal experience.

My caketoppers are made from a seller in Greece though…but I still want them…

I was on Etsy until 1:30 a.m. last night. This is becoming totally normal. Me, and my bank account, are very afraid.

The key is to only browse Etsy while sober. I had a few glasses of wine the other night, and I almost ordered the ugliest amber glassware. Thank goodness I stopped myself.

Girl, I’m pretty sure 90% of the stuff from my wedding was straight off Etsy. <3 So addicting!

I’m addicted to etsy too!! I’ve known about it forever, but never got into it. After I got engaged I just went on looking for some jewelry…. and I’ve been hooked ever since. All of the gifts for parents and our wedding party are from etsy. All of my wedding jewelry, favors, well.. basically everything is from etsy!

Then I look at the nail polish, everyday jewelry, home goods, etc. and I feel like it might make me broke.

I just bought my first (and definitely not my last, I’m sure) Etsy purchase!  I bought a Texas Tech garter set.  It is sooo stinkin’ cute.  Can’t wait to buy more stuff!

@Hyperventilate:  Thanks for the info!  I’m newish to Etsy, so I’ll be sure to research the sellers before I buy anything else!

@dressme3:  …they might have been. We are having an intimate wedding with a wine-paired dinner. Glassware is important! 🙂
