Now I know my girlfriend likes both sapphires and diamonds and has hinted about trilogy rings before.

I'm looking at a ring at the minute with a 1.75ct emerald cut sapphire centre it comes usually with two .3ct emerald cut diamonds either side but I'm thinking these should really be maybe .5 either side? just for proportion?

Shes a size 6 finger? is this going to end up just too big, I dont want it to end up being cocktail ring/liberace looking. I would however like something nice and big so shes pleased with it and dont end up having to reset in future. what do you think ladies. I'm in the uk too, soo rings tend to be a lil smaller than in the states typically. (like below in style expect that is 5ct and 1ct either side! huge!)

hmm it would definitely be showy, but it might not look too big on a size 6 finger.

not too big and personally, I'd prefer the .3 side over the .5 so the focus is sure to be on the gorgeous sapphire

I know it will be showy, thats fine. Just theres a fine line between a nice big ring and something that looks too much or looks like a fake cocktail ring lol

really hard to judge side on a womans finger too, compared to the net.

That ring is stunning and not to much at all.  I would wear that loud and proud.  You did a great job, Congrats.   Don't forget to tell her about WeddingBee for all her planning.

depends on the lady. i'm a size 6 and would consider that to be way too big for me, but that's because i don't wear big jewelry. i like dainty, delicate jewelry instead. i know plenty of women say, "the bigger the better!" though; it all depends on what kind of jewelry your girlfriend prefers. you may also want to consider practicality (depending on her profession, if it would get in the way).

hmmm. I dont think she'd want anything settings wise with lots of little stones as they must get dirty very easily. She works in admin, so no problems there.

as I said, I think im walking kind of a fine line. hence my post.

If her fingers are really long, I don't think that will be too big at all, considering it is an emerald cut.  I think it is a pretty ring.  I think anything bigger than that might be too much though.  It will really depend on her likes and dislikes though.  Its really beautiful.

Ok this is going to take some effort to casually slip into conversation, but find someone with a three stone rings (friend? celebrity?) and comment on the size of the side ones compared to the center. She'll either agree or disagree, and there's your answer! My other thought is to propose with a placeholder ring and she can go with you to pick out the details.

placeholder ring = no, ill bring it up in a jokey way and she'll go yes or no.

I know her taste pretty well though.

To be honest I dont think this is kind of more than shes hoping for so will have to hint in an "as if" kind of way lol

I don't think it's too big either :). I agree with those that have said they like the side stones the size they are now though!

A 1.75 ct sapphire will not be too large at all! Remember that sapphire is denser than diamond so a 1.75 ct sapphire will be a little bit smaller than a 1.75 ct diamond. I think the size sounds perfect actually.

@lookingaring: Often the side stones total (close)to the center weight stone. If you have a 1.75 center stone you can easily get up to .75-.80 diamonds on each side and it looks fine. I would go with at least the .5 carat stones so it has some balance.

Nooo I think .3 will be perfect I would worry that ,5 will distract from the main stone to much. I am in the UK and I have an emerald cut centre stone not sure the carat weight now I think its just under a Carat, I have 2 emerald cut side stones and I think they are .3 or .2 and then another 2 more sides stone that are smaller so 5 in total.

I really disliked the look of larger sides stones I am so glad they don't swamp the centre stone, I have been Christmas shopping with my friends today who I haven't seen since FI proposed and I am embarrassed to say my ring looked huge and thats exactly what they said compared to whats in the shops.

@lookingaring: Beautiful! i dont think it is too big at all. I think .3 would look nicer.  I have a sapphire Ering and the diamonds on the side make it sparkle more so i think the .3 would do that with out over powering the sapphire.

I do not think it would be too big at all. If you are worried about it looking like costume jewelry, why not make the center stone a diamond and have the side accent stones be the colored stones? That would make it look more bridal.

    Ok, so we have progression.

I looked at a 6x9 2ct stone and it was just too big for me with the side stones (for me anyways)

So instead I picked up this 1.25ct sapphire. its 5x7mm.I've not seen it in person yet so still a few nerves about it!

Think im going for .4ct emerald stones (roughly 3.5 x 5mm) either side.

    so ring will be (3.5x5mm <-> 5x7mm <-> 3.5x5mm)

So next bit will be to save up for the diamonds, oddly seems to be cheaper to buy loose diamonds in the states and pay import to the uk, than buy here, weird.

Shank+mounting will be custom, not sure if to go for above or go tiffany style with stones on shank too, think ill know once see stones.

@lookingaring:  That pic of the loose sapphire stone is gorgeous! I think you did a great job picking it out and can't wait to see the final ring once you get the diamonds and setting!

@lookingaring: I really love the setting you posted over anything with more stones, and I'm not a "simple ring" girl myself. It's just so elegant looking. If she wanted more bling later, the wedding band could have small diamonds in it. I think it'd be gorgeous with a diamond & sapphire band though. Heck, it'd be gorgeous with a plain band.

Thanks for the lovely comments, 2ct worried me would be too big for everyday wear and its at 2.15cttw all in as it stands, in the uk thats pretty big (im actually stunned how big engagement rings go over there, wow!).

sapphire is coming from the states too.

Hopefully can pay off diamonds before the summer, least this way once I give her it wont owe any finance on it :) (thats slightly unromantic I know lol)

Phew! I thought the picture in the OP was the real ring--and I thought heck yeah, thats too big! (My ring is about that size and I PINE for something smaller.) But the size/stone you've actually picked out are gorgeous.

sapphire, Its from her not so gentle hints that she wanted a sapphire main stone (but not a solitaire) she doesent know about the diamonds yet, but shown her similar rings which she liked.

She also likes straight cut stones like emerald cut, I think hopefully it shouldn't look too dated either in years to come as its a pretty classic look.

I think sapphire and diamond is enjoying a bit of a revival too due to kate getting dianas ring too..lol
