I have never used one myself, but I know there are electrical/underground fences. There are several dogs in my parents' neighborhood who have them and they seem pretty content. I have never seen them leave their yards. It might be worth looking into.
I can't wait to see the answers that you get. I own a house with a fenced in yard and we are moving to FI's house that is mostly fenced in, meaning his three surrounding neighbors have fenced in their yards. We need a bout 15 from the house to meet the existing fences and will need some money saved before we do.
@Miss Olive: That is definitley something to look into! Thanks!
@HisIrishPrincess: Yep. We have one side that isn't done well, and then a couple places where we need a gate that leads to our drive way (one on either side of the house). We are hoping to use the money from our tax return for it.
We built our own fence last summer to keep pur dog in. It was a lot of work, but a fraction of the cost.
Until you get the fence up or get an electrical fence I would not let the dog out without being on a leesh or someone out there with him. I know its not convenient, but it really is the safest thing.
How many trees are in your yard? Since it's only a temporary situation, maybe you can use a shorter chain, or move it to another part of the yard where he can't get wrapped around the tree?
Otherwise I also recommend the electric fence. Although they are a bit of an initial investment in money and training time.
Are you leaving him out there alone all day? Maybe it's best to keep him safe inside until you get the fence? I would worry that chaining a dog could result in disaster, regardless of the length.
The problem with e-fences is that while they keep the dog in, they don't keep others out.
RE: "The problem with e-fences is that while they keep the dog in, they don't keep others out."
And some dogs will learn that once it gets by the initial zap, he's FREE.
@abbyful: That is a good point. Our dog is really fast and he would probably dart across it. Once they are over the line the fence does no good, which is why we built a fence.
My parents have an electric fence for their 3 dogs and it works great! Their neighborhood doesn't allow any kind of visible fencing so it really is kind of their only option.
@kiddosc: A lot. It's basically an orchard the previous owner was working on before she got older.
@Jeannine @ Small Chic: No. We let him out for about 10-20 minuets before we go to work, then let him back inside. We let him out for about an hour when we get home, take him for a walk after dinner, and let him out for a few minuets before bed. He is in the house at all times when we are not home. We'd never leave him out all day while we are gone.
Can he leap the hedges? During Ike my parents lost a portion of their fence and while waiting for the insurance to pay for it they put up chicken wire on metal posts. It was cheap and easy. You could use the wire to create more of a barrier behind the hedges so its hidden from the front but he can't stroll through the gaps.
@dallasbride2012: no. haha. They are about 6 or 7 feet. But the chicken wire ight be a good idea for now!

Good morning Bee's! As some of you know, we just moved into our house about a month ago. The yard is partially fenced in, but some parts are not.The parts that aren't have high shrubs with gaps between them.
While we are getting the funds together for fencing, we had gotten a heavy chain attached to a metal thing that twists in the ground for our 80 lb Mastiff mix. It had been working out pretty well until a few days ago.
He has figured out a way to slip out of his snug harness by wrapping the chain around a tree and pulling.
So far we are lucky. Twice he has stayed in the yard, but this orning I found him about a block down behind the house (thank god he didn't try to cross the busy street in front).
He does have a collar with phone number and a Pet Watch tag/chip but I am still worried.
Do any of you have an alternate method you use for your dogs to keep them in the yard if it's not fenced all the way yet?
