What about those things they keep coffee hot in? Or any kind of thermos for that matter?
You could get a portable burner to heat it, then trqnsfer it to an insulated coffee server of your choice.

Thanks everyone!
Ive looked at reviews for the big standing cylindrical ones typically used for coffee, and some reviews warn that the fat in milk will muck up the spout pieces, etc. But I'd like to use that if possible, because it would hold more than handheld thermoses and the like.
Cant they make hot chocolate with water and then put cream instead of milk? That way the cream can be kept cold.
@bells: not with the kind of hot chocolate I want to use (hot chocolate on a stick. we will make our own, but this is the basic concept http://www.outblush.com/women/life/food-drinks/ticket-kitchen-three-chili-sticks-service-for-4/index.php )
I've worked with the standing kind in restaurants, and I think you would be ok using it just the once with milk. My concern would be heating that quantity of milk then keeping it warm. I think itd be safer to just heat in smaller batches and refresh as needed. How big is your group? Do you want the milk all served simultaneously or will people graze? Do you have a bartender? You could consider buying or renting a coffee machine that allows you to steam milk (think lattes) & either htave someone serve them a few at a time or get one that might be easy enough for self serve. The issue with that isavoiding scalding.
@les105: The group will be around 100. People will be able to graze, and I figure people will mostly drink them after dinner during the later part of the reception. We will have a bartender, but it will just be a friend of ours who is certified, so I don't know that I want to overwhelm them. Maybe I can find a second person to just do the milk... hmm. great input, thanks!
it sounds like a cool idea, I served in restaurants & catering for 10th years so I am just trying to think what we would have done! I'll post if I can think of a simplified way to handle it. Good luck!

Hi ladies! I need the help of your expertise! These boards always are so helpful!
I love the idea of a hot chocolate bar at the reception because our Colorado wedding will be in the evening in April, so it will be nice weather for it. But I am trying for the life of me to figure out how to warm milk then keep it hot in some sort of beverage dispenser so that guests can serve themselves. Any ideas?! We really don't want to give up on this!
Thanks in advance for any and all input! :)
