Does she have a best friend you can ask to go with you?  Or who might have an idea of exactly what she wants?

@FianceeToBe:  How exciting!! I’m pretty sure most chains will let you return the ring within a specified amount of time, like 60 days or so. I agree with the previous poster about possibly having a best friend of hers go with you, that or a family member, that way you can get an extra opinion.

In all honesty though, I’m sure she will love the ring. Women really like when their guy picks out the ring on his own. It’s sentimental, and I’m sure she will be happy.

@FianceeToBe:  There is no way my fiance could pick out a ring I would like- I went with to help pick it out.  I think it is sweet that you want to pick it out for her, and maybe she will love it, but don’t get upset if she doesn’t.  Most jeweler’s will let you exchange it in a quick turn around time.  Make sure you do your homework about metal types, diamonds, and gem stones.  Some places will charge you waay more than the ring is worth.  Then get the ring appraised and insured.  Good luck!

@FianceeToBe:   Has she admired any engagement rings, or any rings at all?  Have you looked at rings on the internet?  It might help to get a sense of what style she likes.  If you want the ring to be a surprise, you can find a jeweler with a return policy!  Best wishes for every happiness!!

@FianceeToBe:  Firstly, where are you planning to buy the ring? This matters A LOT especially if you don’t know diamonds very well. You want to make sure you get the most for your money, and a lot of chains really take advantage of people!

@FianceeToBe:  It depends where you buy your ring. Ask before you purchase. The store we went to (and my FI and I went together) was Zales and they have a 60 day return policy where I am.

@FianceeToBe:  Some jewelers can put the center diamond that you pick out into a temporary setting – basically a simple solitaire – and then you can tell her she can pick out what she wants!
